Webscription price increase
Haven't seen this discussed and just noticed the link this morning. Webscriptions will increase to $18 starting with the April release.

So!
Last year you got the 'Agency Model' pricing that was a LOT more than a measly $3, spread over 3 NEW (and 2 or 3 backlist) books. Remember, you don't have to pay for DRM at Baen |

I personally don't have a problem with the price increase. Just a heads up.

Considering it has been 9 years since an increase occurred, webscriptions is still a very good deal.
Note that individual ebooks with no DRM or Geographic restrictions are still only $6. |

Often I look at Baen paperbacks on my shelves and think "Oh I forgot that was a Baen book!" For example, many of the fantasy books they published in the 1990s were different from the ones they publish today, and I'd love to see some of the OOP ones in ebook form. However, if the author doesn't want them doing an ebook edition, or if the author is dead and their estate doesn't want to negotiate (or asks for too much money), then readers are out of luck. |

All it really means is that the average 6-book monthly bundle will amortize to $3 per title instead of $2.5.
Of course, Baen did have a fair number of offering overlaps in recent years, but if they're really going to bring more of their unreleased back catalogue into play, then I think the newer Webscriptions may become even more attractive, personally. I don't really care much for most of what they're currently printing new (just not my style) but I quite like a lot of their older books from before all the MilSF seemed to become so predominant and would love to see them available to read again in ebook format. And I'd like it if they assembled some more author/series bundles: buy the lot of Ye Olde Epic Fantasy Quartet and save less than the discount you'd get on a Webscription, but enough to help amortize the cost of a standalone book, just like the Subterranean Press and Nightshade release bundles. |

Since they're still going to have 4 new-to-ebook titles per month, that's a per-new-book price of $4.50 instead of $3.75. That still sounds pretty good to me.

I agree; it represents excellent value for money. What I like about the "pot luck" aspect of the Baen Webscription bundles (which I've bought every one since they started) is that they've introduced me to many authors who I'd simply not have otherwise found.

It's not a subscription in the traditional sense.
They're just bundled books that you can pre-order and start reading in chunks before full release. You choose which bundle to buy or not buy and they always remain available; you can still go and buy the first Webscription release at its original price. (I have all of them though I haven't read all the books; I just like encouraging the good guys. Plus, as has been pointed out, you find some really good reads in there; it's a great way to discover new authors.) Also of note, they support OPDS so you can access their Free Library and your personal purchases from compatible apps like Stanza, Aldiko, FBReaderJ, etc. |

having them all, that's quite an investment I'd think, though I do have a couple of years worth of them.
