JPG image lost when add HTML file to Calibre

I have a novel with one JPG image of a map on the 2nd page.

I save the Word Doc as a Filtered HTML file.
Open the html file and the image is there.
Click "Add Books" button in Calibre and select the html file
Open the added book using the Calibre viewer and the image isnt there. I get the title of the file and a image of a ? mark.
The file is still in HTML but the viewer cant read the image.
Doesn't come over when I convert to EPUB either.

I have tried many different images thinking it was my map. None of the jpg or gif files I try transfer. I created several in Paint, real simple jpg and gif files. Still not working.

Using Calibre 0.9.9

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Check in Miscellaneous to see if the remove first image is checked.

Edit:
Miscellaneous
There are a few more options in this section.

Remove first image
Sometimes, the source document you are converting includes the cover as part of the book, instead of as a separate cover. If you also specify a cover in calibre, then the converted book will have two covers. This option will simply remove the first image from the source document, thereby ensuring that the converted book has only one cover, the one specified in calibre.

I checked the Remove First Image

Thanks for the advice. I found the "Remove first image" and it isn't checked. I don't have a cover for the book yet and the map is on the 2nd page.

As a test I created a 3 page word docx
Included a simple jpg from paint
And then added to Calibre.

JPG does not show up. I get the title of the jpg, "simple pic.jpg" and an image of a ? mark.

the ? mark is a place holder for a missing image

HTML is a package when it includes images and other stuff.
you need to zip all the pieces up and add that.
(or just add a manifest that will tell calibre where all the pieces ARE, so it can grab those and make the package.)

Attach your test html file, then someone will be able to tell you what the problem is.

Losing all my images in converted epub file

I have a large textbook I am trying to convert to an ebook. It was originally written in Word format, then I save it as html and convert to epub with Calibre, but the final product loses all the images, which are mostly jpeg. Everything else work fine. I didn't have this problem previously (I update Calibre regularly, so I'm thinking maybe a version update issue?)

Can anyone help?

Problem solved

Thank you for the suggestions. The following steps worked perfectly:

Saved the docx to filtered HTML
Put the html file and it's supporting folder in a zip file
Added the zip file to Calibre
Converted the zip file to epub

Thank you again for the help.
