Just got a red T1 delivered today (Dell had them for $99 with free shipping a week or so ago), so I'll have to see how that works out; I didn't want the glossy black one - hate how that looks on monitors. I figure if I got used to the silver of my PRS-350, I should be able to adapt (though I really do like some of those DecalGirl decals ).

Be careful with silicone skins. I find they tend to make the various electronic items hot. It acts almost like a hotsuit of some sort and keeps the heat in. I found that with my iPods over the years & just stopped using them altogether. They got too hot. I went with cases that I could slip the device in and out of or decals.

I'm not an electronics specialist but I don't think having a hotter than normal piece of electronic equipment is a good thing.

Just shows what one person finds annoying, another doesn't. I found it did glare, quite annoyingly, hence why I bought a case that covered the bezel.

I'd love to have the courage to do what the OP described, but I would be too afraid of damaging the case. I applied a Decalgirl skin (Haiku - essentially black with a free screensaver image) to only the front of the unit and it's like night and day. I didn't realize how much the glare bothered me until I had a matte black reader!

I've never seen a silicone skin but was wondering if you could cut out the back for more airflow/less heat. I just want the front bezel covered but won't pay $20 for a skin just for that. The bundle of silicone cover, car charger, and home charger for about $18 would fill all my needs.

I'm not an electronics specialist but I don't think having a hotter than normal piece of electronic equipment is a good thing.

Heat makes electronics age faster. Without going into the technical details, the distance between the metal lines in modern IC:s is measured in nanometers, which makes electromigration a very real problem, and heat accelerates that process. Also, electrolytic capacitors are to be considered more or less perishable. Even though the SMD caps found in iPods and other stuff that's made to be tiny usually are better in this aspect, they still age, a process also accelerated by heat.

However, it's not really a problem. Even though your iPod runs a few degrees too hot due to that silicone case, and that takes a few years of its lifetime, it'll still survive far longer than you'll use it. I'd say 20 years is a reasonable expected lifetime for that kind of equipment used under ideal conditions. You'll probably either break it some other way, or replace it with something better in less than half that time.

So, in essence, you can keep using that silicone case without any worries

That silicone holder will do nothing to protect the screen. A cover will give some screen protection.

I'm not interested in protecting the screen with the silicone holder; I already use a cover. This thread is about solutions to the bezel glare problem.

I've never noticed any heat from my ereader, but I'll keep your warning in mind, Shopaholic.

Geckofriend, I don't see why the back couldn't be cut off the skin if heat does prove to be a problem.

I guess when you receive yours (tomorrow?) and give us some feedback we'll know more definitively.

Received my silicone skin yesterday, here are my impressions.

Pros:
  • easy as pie to "install", it slips right over the ereader.
  • provides very minor cushion to the ereader.
  • fits like a glove but gives full access to the buttons, ports and power button on the bottom, and the card slot on the back.
  • provides a very nice non-slip grip to the ereader.

Cons:
  • Lint magnet! Though the shiny bezel was a fingerprint magnet, so...
  • Adds a couple ounces of weight to the ereader, but even with the skin on my T1 is still lighter than my old 600.
  • Since it's non-slip, it won't slide into the neoprene sleeve that I saved from my old 600. (Not really an issue for those not using a sleeve, and as I ordered a case it will only be an issue for me for a couple days).

I'm fairly certain the back could be cut away as mentioned earlier, but I have no desire to do so.

edit: Another pro: I frequently hold my ereader by the upper right corner between my index and middle fingers. Without the skin my index finger often triggers the dog-ear page function, but with the skin on my finger wasn't accidently brushing the screen.

Thanks for the feedback AndrewH. I think I'll go ahead and order the silicone skin and chargers bundle I was looking at.

Some people seem to think those silicone covers make the ereader look ugly, but I really like mine. The only slight negative is as AndrewH says, it's a lint magnet, but as well as not showing up fingerprints, it means I can read in bed even after using hand lotion as the silicone covers the page turn buttons on my Kindle Keyboard. I can't see from the photos, are the page turn buttons covered by the silicone cover when on the PRS-T1?

No, it doesn't cover the buttons. It's much easier to see when looking at the pink cover.
