Bluetooth Page Turning
Hi, I am looking at storing sheet music in calibre in PDF format for cataloging and to attach the correct metadata. There is a product out called Airturn BT-105 (wireless pedal controller) that I would like to purchase and use to turn pages with my foot while I am playing the music on the computer. Does anyone know if there is a plugin required or if there is support for this device? Thanks.

BTW Calibre can manage the PDF and you can use the Open with PI to launch alternate PDF viewers. Calibre usually defaults to using the Systems default PDF viewer, bbut can be configured to use calibres EPUB viewer (with a on the fly convert.) I do not think this would be a good solution for music. Stay native PDF |

The pedal can connect to one or two footswitches to be programmed for PgUp, PgDn, Left Arrow, Right Arrow. There may be better devices out there, but this one seemed to do what I would like regarding hand-free page turning.

It should just work. I have one and use it with my iPad and MacBook Pro. You can configure the pedals to generate r/l arrow, page down/up, and most apps will support that sort of keyboard navigation. Mobile apps, not necessarily, but 4Score is what I use on the iPad and it works well with the pedals.

Calibre Notes
Thanks for the tip on 4score. Had a look at it on my ipad and decided to purchase it. Looks really good. They are looking at tweaking the program for the Ipad Pro which is coming out shortly. Should be able to fit a whole page of music on the screen.
Still looking into which is the best foot switch to use. Have had some not so good reviews on the BT-105, possibly pageflip or iRig Blueboard. Am still looking at using calibre to catalogue all the sheet music. Is it possible to add notes/comments? |

I have a Professional Musician (Trumpet ) living next door. I was discussing the state of Automation on the music stand. (I found out that I knew almost nothing ) things I learned: His music only included the Trumpet part with a note to 'rest' where the other bars would be Like you, he makes notes all over the place about how it need to be really played for the venue. IMHO You need a PDF Viewer-editor that has a Note Layer. Calibre PDF is basic Conversion OUTPUT. IMHO You do not want any 'conversion' in the middle of you music Conversions always change things, even if it is slight. It happens. |

I actually have the PageFlip Firefly. It can connect with Bluetooth or USB (to a laptop/desktop). Haven't had any problems with it.

You will not need a plugin to turn pages in Calibre: the AirTurn controllers emulate a bluetooth keyboard. You can set it into different modes, emulating the up/down, left/right, pgup/pgdwn keys. I have just finished building such a system, using a stick computer (which came with Windows 10), a 40 inch TV wall-mounted above my Nord C2D organ, an AirTurn PED controller to turn pages, and a Tronsmart Airmouse/keyboard combo to control the computer. The only difference is that I don't use Calibre; I just use PDF's stored in the Documents folder, and display them using SumatraPDF. I configured the program to start full screen, pages side-by-side, and locked the configuration file by making it read-only. As Calibre's viewer reacts to the left/right, up/down and pgup/pgdwn keys (each in different ways), you can configure the controller to work with it as well. Thanks for all the info. How do you find the SumatraPDF instead of Adobe?
I thought of just putting it in folders, by my husband wants to attach metadata to the music which is why we were initially looking at calibre. He likes what I have done with all my books. But if can't save it as correct format, will need to look at other options. Does anyone have any other options that they use? |

SumatraPDF website
If you wish to add Metadata to the PDF-files, you can use calibre. What I would do is simplify the user interface, removing and disabling any toolbars and menu's you don't need. Then add the Open With plugin and/or set SumatraPDF to be the default PDF viewer. Then you can double-click a file in Calibre and open it in SumatraPDF. SumatraPDF remembers its last settings such as window size. Set it to display double pages by default, and then go fullscreen. Close the program with CTRL-Q. To make sure SumatraPDF doesn't change this state, set the configuration file in its installation folder to Read-Only. The reason I use SumatraPDF is because it's fast to load and turn pages. I'm in the process of putting down the cable guides and acquiring cables of the correct length, after mounting the TV.
Somewhere this week everything should be finished. I could post a picture of the setup if you'd want to, although there's not too much to see, apart from a TV, mounted above an organ, displaying sheet music |

Hi, I have set up a new calibre library and have removed a lot of the options on the main toolbar. Have set up specific columns with things like Key, Genre, Time etc, still playing with those options at the moment.
Do you know where I can get the plugin to open with SumatraPDF? Thanks |

There are two options.
1. Right-click a PDF and click "Open With..." (use Shift-Right-Click if this option does not appear). 2. Browse to where you put SumatraPDF and select this program as default. 3. In Calibre, go to Preferences -> Change calibre behavior -> Behavior. Uncheck PDF under "Use internal viewer". Calibre should now use the default PDF-viewer for the system, which you set to SumatraPDF in step 1 and 2. Alternatively, if you want a different default PDF-viewer but still want SumatraPDF for calibre, you can install the Open With plugin: Preferences -> Get Plugins to enhance calibre. |
