Dragging a book over the Book Details window
If you drag a book that you want to add to your library and place it over the Book Details window, it incorrectly shows the plus sign icon, meaning it should add the book. Except that it won't add a book from that location, nothing happens.
It should show the no symbol (circle with backslash through it) when you drag a book over the Book Details window, like it does if you drag a book over the Tag or Cover Browser areas. I'm not even sure I'd count it as a bug, just an inconsistency in how things work. |

So it's possible I've replaced books accidentally when accidentally dragging over the Book Details window...
That really seems an odd way to do it without any warning message at all. At least if you dragged a cover, you'd know it from the cover change, but with the book, it doesn't even show a job in progress. Which means I need to check all books to find where this happened. Argh! ![]() |

Maybe Kiwidude could add a 'possibly wrong book' check to the QC PI that fuzzy compares the metadata to that within and flags those that fail on n+ points.

Or is it possible to totally block the swap of a book by dragging to that area? It seems risky without any warning at all.
Edit: At least I found this neat little program as a result of my big blunder that finds duplicate files, and it did a fantastic, quick job: DoubleKiller I still think there should be some warning when dragging to the Book Details pane, or a way to block it entirely if you choose. I use the feature extensively - can't recall having ever dragged a file to the wrong book - and I would be most disappointed if this valuable feature was regarded as a defect and removed from the product
Maybe there could be True/False Tweak that if True pops a confirmation dialogue - default would be False. BR |

I'm not at all suggesting to do away with the feature. But as long as I've used Calibre for at least the last 2.5 years, I've never known about that feature, hence my "misuse" of it.
I'm just suggesting a warning when you drag a book there with a box to tick to never show that warning again, the same as when deleting a book or completing certain tasks has in the lower left corner to choose to not see those warnings again. And/or an option only for those users who never use it to disable dragging anything to the Book Detail pane. I certainly don't want the feature eliminated. |

I'm with BetterRead. I discovered that accidentally a while ago and use it often. I have made a couple of mistakes, but was always able to recover. A prompt would make sense so long as there is a don't show again option.

I have always wanted an 'accepted' audio feedback eg a simple "snick" sound for drops as I sometime wonder if I managed the replace type drop

I got lucky, I think, in that I never knew Drag & Drop worked in calibre until after I saw a post saying to be careful where and how you used it.

I honestly wasn't aware until I read this thread that there was any way other than drag and drop to add books to Calibre

Besides using the CLI
Dropping an OPF or Book into the Library list creates a NEW record (unless a duplicate is detected) Dropping a Book into Details or (single Metadata edit) Formats adds or replaces a format Dropping a cover into the Cover into (single) Metadata edit or onto the Details cover and all the Add Books Menu (choices) ![]() |
