UPDATE to my previous post:

Oops, sorry ... my bad!

I checked "use subfolders" in "file formats" in Kobo Utilities and now normal service has been resumed.

I changed it to
{author_sort}/{title} - {authors}
but Calibre is still dropping books to the Kobo root. I also checked the save template under "file formats" on the the "Device" icon when the Kobo is connected; it is also set to
{author_sort}/{title} - {authors}

So for now I'm manually creating an author folder on the device and moving the book into it.
I had to insert
MyBooks/
in front of the existing Template

I think the change was a fallout of allowing other paths to be used because of some vendor default structure changes.
(It is possible I just made the MyBooks MY default shortly after I got my Aura2, but that did not explain why it did not transfer over for Calibre 8, when other stuff did)

I'm not absolutely certain but I don't think the device select in the configuration for the Kobo Utilities will affect the use of a template defined for the KoboTouch driver. I know the template in the Send to Device configuratation in Send to device is overridden by the template set on the KoboTouch driver.

For what it may be worth, the template I am using with the KoboTouch driver and which transferred over to calibre 8.0 (and 8.0.1) is:

Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}

My calibre ebooks are stored in a directory in the root of the Kobo exposed storage called Ebooks.

Inside that directory, directories are created based on the first entry in the author sort list. i.e. Muir, Tamsyn

Inside the author sort based directories, ebooks are stored with a filename created from the title - first entry in the author list. i.e. Tor.com Publishing 2019 Debut Sampler - Tamsyn Muir.epub (or .kepub.epub if on the fly conversion is enabled).

For that sample book, all 10 authors are stored in the database for search, etc.

Hello Kovid
Thanks for your reply, but I can't find the Kobo icon. Should it be in a menu, on the main screen, or in Preferences?

regards,
Hans

It really is the device (view) Icon when a device is connected as Calibre stores individual settings for EACH DEVICE TYPE. Also note that for some (other) devices, the icon looks different (or it used to).
If you are not seeing these icons AND the device is recognized (status bar or On Device column), the Icon may be off screen >>> as you can no longe delete 'Location Manager' (the icon group for connected devices)

It's the Device button.
Right click and chose 'Configure this device' select the 'Collections, covers & uploads' tab.
Near the bottom is the 'Uploading of books' section.
Turn off the 'Use Kobo viewer for EPUB books' option.

If you want to be really sure, on the first tab, 'File formats' you can uncheck the kepub option at the top of the list of types of files to send to you reader.

Hope that works for you.

Is there any way to not save the Kepub file when sending to Kobo? Previously, when I sent an ePub to the kobo it would create a Kepub file on the fly and send it but wouldn't store the Kepub file in my Calibre library.

That is not the normal way it works. I still only have 1 KEPUB after many sends since 8.x
I simply click Send to device and the device gets the title.epub.kepub
The source is epub in my Library. I use Kobo extended edition mode
See image for how I am set

Make sure that you have both kepub and epub selected as "Formats to send" to the Kobo device. If you only have kepub selected, Calibre with convert it and store the converted format. If you have epub selected, it will send it and convert it on the fly, without storing a copy.

Kepub doesn't need to be selected at all. Epub is sufficient. If the option "Use Kobo Viewer..." has been checked, then kepubs will be sent anyway.

That is true, if there are no kepub format files in Calibre, but if any books only have kepub, and it is not selected, Calibre will to convert it to epub, then convert it back when sending. It is better to just have both selected.

Ah. Well, I've never had any books in kepub format in my library, so I didn't know that. I download my Kobo purchases as epubs.

Thanks, that might be it! I'll give it a try next time. This setting is confusing cause you'd think that it would send an ePub to the Kobo instead of converting to Kepub on the fly. Thank you!
