How many documents would you want to store on the iPad, and what is their average size? Even the smallest 16GB iPad is able to comfortably store thousands of typically-sized documents.

Personally I think the 32GB model (which I have) represents the best compromise between size and price.

i would like your opinion, which device would be better for a4 pdf viewing not necessarily sharpness, but to display well without moving and zooming the document:

1) the 14" screen with 1920x1080 of ASUS Transformer Book
2) the new Ipad's 10" screen
3) the 10.1" 1920×1200 of Asus Transformer Pad Infinity

thanks

All of the devices listed are "really portable". They fit in your pocket. The SSD devices are pretty close to being SD cards with wifi.

If you chose an Android tablet without an SD slot, you could use an SD card, a USB OTG cable and Stickmount.

As for your question about the Transformer vs. the iPad, I think it's difficult to judge without trying both devices. Obviously, 11.6, 13 and 14" sound better than 10" if you're only concerned with not having to manipulate or resize an A4 (8.27 × 11.69) pdf in order to see all of it. However, the user experience is hard to quantify purely with specs. Apple stores are fairly ubiquitous -- why not try going to one and viewing an A4 pdf on an iPad there?

My Transformer Infinity just arrived. I can make some comparisons over the weekend.

@user
Do you have some specific documents you might want to test?

Sorry, was sick over the weekend and had to deal with some minor annoyances on the Transformer Infinity. It won't read my SanDisk 64GB Class 10 microSDXC card. However, it does appear to work with the SanDisk 32GB Class 4 microSDHC just fine. I'll post some screenshots later with the iPad, Transformer Infinity and Nexus 7. Still trying to figure out what would be a good alternative for GoodReader on Android. I don't deal with pdfs a lot so for now, I'm just using Mantano Reader, same as what I use for epub.

Ezpdf is probably the best on Android for Pdf however it truly does not have all the fantastic features GoodReader has...

Isn't there an emulator like Wine for Linux on Windows systems, so we can run Goodreader on Android?

I've seen a lot of laptops with decent specs selling for $400 or so. I reckon margins on laptops are just very slim to make the switch practical until manufacturing catches up to make high pixel density displays as standard. How many folks would be willing to pay MacBook prices for an HP/Dell/Lenovo/etc laptop in order to get 200ppi pixel density? Tablets still command higher prices despite the no doubt cheaper ARM processors, 1-2GB RAM, 8-32GB NAND and Windows license. Seriously, Intel seems to charge an arm and a leg for their chipsets and Core-series mobile processors.

But we get tablets with smaller then 15.6" with full HD screens or even better (1920x1200 or 1920x1080) so why cannot laptop have a real high res screen instead of the 1366x768. That's just garbage.

And why is it that most monitor makers feel that all we need/want is 1920x1080 when more lines is what we really want? I have a 1600x1200 resolution monitor and 1080 just doesn't cut it.

The laptop I am using now has 1280x800. I much prefer it to 1366x768. I don't need as much width as I do height.

And there are 15.6" laptops with 1920x1200 resolution (at least there used to be). If I remember correctly, they cost $250-300 more than 1280x800 res laptops. Unfortunately, people want cheap and there's not much incentive to continue making hi-res display laptops when few people are willing to shell out the cash for it. Besides, it's easier to start small. Didn't Apple have to delay release of the retina display for the iPad so manufacturing can keep up?

On this point, I agree. Guess making 1366x768 and 1920x1080 panels is just cheaper since that's the standard HDTVs use. Really do miss 16:10 monitors. I'm just glad most Android tablets still use 16:10 instead of 16:9. Really sucks that there are barely any options for 4:3/5:4 and the few that exist are very pricey.

Didn't have time to take pictures/screenshots (will do that later) but I do have some impressions. It's actually readable on the Nexus 7 (7" 1280x800) even without zooming. Not particularly ideal but it works in a pinch.

As expected, the iPad (2012) is a better match given its aspect ratio. The PDF pretty much occupies the iPad's entire screen. The TF700T is noticeably narrower so you get a smaller render of the PDF page with fairly big black bars at the top and bottom. GoodReader also appears to be faster/more responsive compared to ezPDF and seems a lot richer in terms of features so that's a plus for iOS. Text is quite clear and legible on both the iPad and Infinity. If you have poor near vision though, letter-sized and A4 documents would be rendered bigger on the iPad than on the Infinity in portrait mode with a standard fit to width/fit to page zoom.

If storage isn't a concern and this is the type of file you deal with regularly, the 2012 iPad is what I'd go for. Otherwise, the Transformer Infinity TF700T works well enough.
