So it gets checked a first or second time. But let's say it was an explosive device and was checked into the cargo hold. The trigger could easily be time or pressure activated. How do you stop that?

Yes, they do that at Heathrow. Get out of the plane, go through to the security checkpoint, enter the new plane. Both to and from the US.

Can't imagine flying without my e-reader--hate flying but look forward to the hours of uninterrupted reading. It really helps with plowing through a book that I've dawdled on. Hope this regulation doesn't become the norm as I don't want to read on my phone. I listen to audiobooks but I tend to nod off after an hour or two when I listen to music or books while flying.

I think to some extent it may be based on different experiences. AFAIK Americans have not been affected by Islamist terrorism in Tunisia, whereas a lot of Britons have been. And Kuwait, Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports are known for their modernity and sophistication. Both lists include Egyptian and Turkish airports, which don't have such a good record. So I am prepared to believe that the British list has some basis in reality. Moreover, it does not exempt British airlines, whereas the American one applies only to non-American airlines. [....]

UK List: Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia | Lebanon, Tunisia

US List: Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia | Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, United Arab Emirates

So all a terrorist has to do is find a non-restricted airport. UK bound terrorists can fly out of Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, or the United Arab Emirates. US bound terrorists can fly out of Lebanon or Tunisia.

Well, you could always resort to dead-tree books for those occasions. I can't read those anymore, but since I'm well accustomed to audiobooks, I'm fine. We have a small collection of dead-tree books for my Mom as she prefers those when away from home rather than her paperwhite (i've tried).

Hello,
Does anyone have any advice about the best way to pack my ereader? It has a case. I'm thinking padded envelope and try to get it in the middle of my suitcase for the homeward journey.

I really don't want to leave it in less secure hold luggage, but apparently won't have a choice. I don't have space to pack the seven plus books I'll read in my week long holiday.

I know they want to do this for security, goodness know the horrible news coming out of London today drives it home. I know it's such a first world problem, but reading and my kobo are really important to me.

There are three security checks in every one of the four Turkish airports I have been to,compared to the usual one in the UK. I have never made it onto a plane home from Turkey without having to power on my phone and kobo and show it to security staff at least twice. The intelligence services obviously know a lot more than we do, but I'm really scratching my head.

The US ban applies to specific airports; the British one applies to all flights originating anywhere in the specified countries.

Does anyone know if DSLR cameras will be included in this ban? EgyptAir's offices say "no", but a BBC News article suggests they will. I'm visiting Egypt next month on one of my regular photography trips there, and generally fly with only a cabin bag. I dread arriving at Luxor airport and being told I have to check my camera, and not having a suitcase to put it in.

The only thing I see about camera's is...

Cameras
You can usually take camera equipment in your hand and hold luggage. There might be restrictions on specialist equipment, for example professional video cameras.

Thanks, Brian. I'll check with EgyptAir again shortly before my trip and see what they say then when this has been in force for a few weeks. Does sound hopeful, though.

First of all: get a hardshell suitcase. I personally dislike a hardshell case, but we got one especially because of our overseas trip. I packed making sure I had clothes (or other soft things) on both sides of the case and packed anything fragile right smack in the middle (in our case, it was a bottle of wine). So it was completely surrounded by softness and the hard shell of the case made sure it couldn't be dented.

I think with how suddenly these bans were announced and are going to be implemented I have a feeling they have some kind of information on an active threat.
