Books with multiple formats
[QUOTE=kovidgoyal;3518675]Hi all,
After almost three years of on-and-off development, calibre 3.0 is now ready for beta testing! Dear Kovid Thank you for making a rather wonderfull piece of software. I am a writer of Biblical and Philosophical books and am currently putting a library together to make a new Bible for the Children of the Future. I am going back to the oldest and best biblical books which were left out f the bible - The Book of Enoch, The Sayings of Jesus, The Books of Adam and Eve, Noah, etc. I am typsetting them and colating them into a collection because it is more a problem of knowing which books are important among the many millions of books now readily available via the internet. That is the essence of my work. Now, I just loaded 1.2 Calibre and have got the basics of my library up and going. The performance is great. Instant, in fact, on Linux Mint 17. I don't want to lose that. Everything works fine. However, my originals ar in .ODT format, of which I have also created .PDF files manually with Libre Office, as a final product. These PDF files came out perfect. A lotbBetter than what comes out of Calibre. I could not find a way to bring the two files together as one in Calibre. After I changed the Author and Title to be the same, they still showed as individual entries. Its important that the two high quality objects are in the library together, so that I can throw away my original files and maintain everything directly from inside Calibre. My question, I suppose, is if the version 3 can do this? I read that it is not advisable to put files into the Calibre folder structure manually, so I did not try that, yet it could be an option. If you would like me to do a performance test agains of 3 against the older version, I would be happy to do that if you helped me with any problems I might get from the pre-release. And of course any bugs I would report also. Once again, a very great thanks to you. Without you it would not be possible for me to do my work, as I live according to the rules of the holy people. Best wishes Adam |

This has nothing to do with the calibre v3 beta, but you can always use "Add format" to add an additional ebook file to the first entry. You can also Merge two entries together.

Moderator Notice @Adam of Bremen - Because your post had nothing really to do with beta testing version 3.0, I moved it and eschwartz' response to the Library Management forum. In addition to previous suggestions, you can also add additional format files to an existing book by drag-dropping the file into the book details panel, or into the Edit Metadata Formats box. And the Preferences->Add Books->The adding process tab has specific settings that can be used to control auto-merging. Most of these have been available in calibre for many years. It comes as no surprise that Libre Office Writer can convert ODT, its native format, to PDF better than calibre. Apart from the fact that ODT is native to LO they are both fixed format page oriented formats, where as most e-books, which is what calibre primarily targets, are continuous flow oriented formats. AFAIK, because the database and library folders don't change the performance of version 3.0 should be indistinguishable from version 2.nn. I can't discern any difference between 2.85 and the beta on my major libraries that range from ~4,000 to ~120,000 books. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 05-12-2017 at 07:47 PM. |
