Ok with the shakey start 34c would not install.

There is now a new version for the original jetbooks 34b

It does install properly and can be downloaded

Someone else will have to test the DRM

Feedback:

1. PDFs seem to open faster and navigate better
2. Txt files seem the same, at least nothing I can put my finger on yet
3. Version reports properly
4. Dictionary appears to function the same
5. Bookmarks function the same

If you load 34b, it will upgrade to 34c just fine... I ran the upgrade earlier, and I'm running 34c on my book now .

As a followup, a B&N .pdb file isn't recognized by the system. Not sure about others.

I was going to test a Barnes and Noble ebook on the new jetbook firmware.

1. Signed up with Barnes and Noble
2. Entered credit information
3. Purchased HG Wells novel for $.99
4. Downloaded ebook
5. Copied to jetbook
6. Jetbook does not see file
7. Went back to B&N and downloaded reader for PC
8. Opened my ebook in B&N reader
9. Book cover comes up and it is Marque de Sade !
10. Open reader to get book from B&N
11. Open ebook from their server in reader
12. Book is Marque de Sade !
13 Close reader
14 Find file on computer
15 Check file name and it is HG Wells
16 Call customer service at B&N
17 On hold for 15 minutes
18 Customer Service tells me she has never seen the wrong ebook delivered
19 CS says because I downloaded the book there is no refund !
20 CS tells me she has to transfer me to a different division
21 Wait on hold for over 1 hour and hang up
22 Place call to my credit card company to challenge the credit card charge
23 Go to B&N to cancel my account
24 Can't cancel the account
25 Go to message board to ask how to cancel the account.
26 Send an email to customer service to cancel account

Time Spent 2.5 hours
Customer that will ever buy from B&N again --- 0

All this to check and see if B&N books work.

At this point this is one person that does not care if B&N ever sells another ebook.

I don't think the v34c version is supposed to be the one with DRM, as support has mentioned that once the Lite's firmware is finalized and the DRM stuff works on it, THEN they will port it over to the regular Jetbook. I believe the 34c version is mainly to get everyone up to the same firmware level as the currently shipping models. Mainly to appease the 'where's my promised firmware', 'it's after the 1st, where's the firmware', etc. Patience will pay off in the end I believe. I'd rather have DRM working well instead of how it is on the Lite as it is now. I can wait, got too many non-drmed books to even worry about it right now, lol.

But for the people who only have drm'ed books, I can definitely sympathize with them, but the description on their site for the regular JB, and on their retail outlets don't mention DRM, so if we EVER get it on the regular JB, it's a bonus...

What browser are you using ?

Some browsers are setup to not allow download of exe files

If you can't turn off the protection cut and paste the second link
into a new browser window and you should be able to download it.

Then your system should be able to open it. You will extract the file
with all the directory structure to your SD card

No 34b does not even see secure epub files (.pdb) from fictionwise.com yet

So no DRM support yet for the original jetbook

The firmware update started then failed to install.

Nate,

Make sure your battery is full charged. Even when the power is plugged in sometimes it will fail if the battery is not full charged.

Because the updates use md5 checksums the jetbook will not even start the update if you got a bad download from the internet.

Please try again.

Actually, it could fail the install because of certain other checks besides the md5's. This is often the case in flashing the jetBook <--> Aluratek firmware.

Version .33g came out last August (6 months ago). I think many are frustrated with the slow pace of development. With the ebook reader market exploding Ectaco does not have a long window of opportunity. Adding only a few things could make them a real player. If the current developer is not up to the task they need to think about hiring some more to get the job done quickly.

Successfully update to .34c. It is noticibly faster than .33g. However, no new fonts and the landscape-view very slow redraws are still there. Somebody please save us from Arial!
