Google Editions will E-Book-Markt aufmischen

Google plant seinen eigenen E-Book-Store "Google Editions" . Zeitgleich zum erwarteten Boom der E-Lesegeräte soll in ersten Hälfte von 2010 der Vertrieb für elektronische Bücher online gehen.

Das Neue daran: Im Gegensatz zu den großen Konkurrenten in diesem Marktsegment wie Barnes & Noble oder Amazon wird Google nicht auf DRM setzen, d.h. den Kunden nicht auf bestimmte Hardware beschränken. Alle E-Bücher, die über Google Editions gekauft werden, sollen in einem Standardformat für alle Lesegeräte einsetzbar sein. Nicht neu hingegen ist die Idee selbst: Buy Ebook, Ebooks.com und Scribd liefern bereits jetzt E-Bücher, die auf allen Computern gelesen werden können. Google geht lediglich einen Schritt weiter und setzt auf ein universelles E-Buchformat und schließt ePub- und PDF-Formate aus.

Googles E-Bücher können auf jedem Internet-fähigen Computer dargestellt und gelesen werden. Letztendlich ist es dann eine Frage des persönlichen Geschmacks, ob der Leser sich zum Kauf eines Lesegeräts im Buchformat mit angepasstem Kontrast durchringt oder sich mit einem beliebigen Laptop oder Smartphone begnügt.

Laut einem Bericht von Reuters werden alle E-Bücher in Googles Edition wie in Googles Book Search mit Suchindex versehen werden.

Das würde bedeuten, daß Google auf html und/oder xml setzt (was sich immerhin problemlos in epub oder mobi wandeln läßt) - und wenn die Teile wirklich drm-frei sind (und Google seinen Shop nicht nur mit [den zugegebenermaßen sehr zahlreich verfügbaren] Publicdomain-Titeln füllen will), dann müssen sie bei vielen Verlagen so ziemlich alle Manager-Schultern ausgekugelt haben, bevor sie von denen das ok dafür bekommen haben

Wir leben also in wahrhaft interessanten (interessant im chinesischen Sinn) Zeiten ...

Auf jeden Fall belebt sich das Geschäft

Ich bin sehr gespannt, welches Format sie denn nehmen werden - XML/HTML wären auf jeden Fall am Zukunftssichersten. Das Formatchaos ist allgemein einer der Hauptgründe, warum ich derzeit keinen Cent für ein DRM-eBook zahlen werde - ich habe keine Lust, dass mein Buch in 5 Jahren schon auf keinem Reader mehr gelesen werden kann. Insofern kann Google vielleicht helfen, einen (DRM-freien) Standard zu etablieren.

Auch wenn ich kein allzu großer Google-Freund bin, darauf setze ich jetzt auch einiges an Hoffnungen. Wird interessant!
