It creates the fbset.txt file and a config file called "screensaver.example.cfg". Am I supposed to rename to config file?

You can rename it, but it's not mandatory. It mainly does that so updateing the addon won't overwrite your (possibly customized) config. The addon will stick to default values for anything not specified in the config.

Which firmware version are you using? (Settings -> Device Information) For 3.x and early 4.x you're still supposed to be using the version from the first post.

And are you using the blank sleep screen (that just says "Sleeping", nothing else, no book stats / covers, disable those)? If you have affiliate logo appearing there you might want to change your affiliate.conf

You have to go into Standby for the first scanline to appear (give it a few secs, should cross the "Standby" text), and once that happened, Poweroff for the same. You should have two lines in your screensaver.cfg afterwards:

I have already disabled the affiliate logo (from Fnac) by using following code in affiliate.conf

Right now I have "Sleeping" and "Powered off" text (although the exact words are in Dutch) when I turn off the screen. Book covers are disabled in the Settings. I have put the device into standby and powered it off a couple of times as well. It keeps saying the "Sleeping" text and in the screensaver.example.cfg I don't see any scanlines appearing...
Any idea?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it + reinstalling without uninstalling without success. I am using KA1-4.2.8283-ScreenSaver-experiment2.zip

The scanline would not appear in the .example but in a new file screensaver.cfg - if it's not already in there (in this case you might edit and delete). Also on screen, like this. (Line appears short while after Sleeping appears.)

Yes, me too... I even checked the checksums, I am using the very same script and version I uploaded here.

I guess I'll just have to add a full blown debuglog but I just didn't get around to it, sorry

I haven't changed anything, but it just started working all of a sudden. I saw the line through "Sleeping" all of a sudden, then did a power off and then it started working.

Somehow it took a while to configure itself. Very cool, thanks for the help!

@obelice: It doesn't seem to work for KA1 for reasons unclear.

I want to re-write parts of this script (to do proper RGBA handling for the scanline at least, not sure if that will fix anything) but I simply lack the time / motivation to do so (anything Kobo-mod-related) at the moment.

If someone wants to take over, feel free - it's open source in my GitHub.

There was also another screensaver mod which I believe used LD_PRELOAD to hook itself directly into nickel... I didn't like this approach (and it clashes with nightmode, KSM, and other mods that do the same and modify the rcS script to do it) but it might be the more reliable route after all, who knows.

I added some pictures on the screensaver folder, but none of the pictures are recognized as like in the case of kbmenupngs in the folder.

Hi, I'm to this forum. It looks like nice work gets done here. I just got a new Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 with the 4.4.9298 Firmware and the Screensaver doesn't work. I don't see the scan lines on the screen. It did create the screensaver.cfg with the long line of code, but I don't get any images. Just the "stand by" and "off" text (in french).

Hi, I've been a long time lurker on these forums, now reporting back as there were some other Glo users (@alonemrinal, @Semwize) with challenges... Although I could not get KoboRoot-ScreenSaver-4.x-20160918.zip as attached to the first post to work, the version KA1-4.2.8283-ScreenSaver-experiment2.zip as attached to this post works perfect on my Glo with firmware 4.5.9587 (together with nightmode and a bunch of GeoffR's patches).

Maybe that experiment2 version could be mentioned/linked in the first post as working for all devices except the KA1. I think it's currently overlooked/interpreted as being *only* for the KA1, not for any of the other devices with new firmwares...

I'm a newbie in the e-reader world and my first is a Kobo Mini. I found this hack to be very interesting, yet I haven't been able to use this hack on mine. I'm currently running on version 3.19.5761, with only 1 other hack that change the system font to work with my language. My file won't install & reboot on it own and I do the sleeping/poweroff cycles a few times but nothing happen, last time I tried I put it in a folder that have "KoboRoot.tgz" name (stupid me), which made it worked but then it just keep restarting and then it said critical errors (I pressed X to let it run the restart again, few times), at the end I have to give in and reset the whole device back to factory settings.
So, hope anyone can help, I really like this hack to go on to my device

This is a very outdated hack, for one thing. But I managed to have it working on my Kobo Aura for a darn long time so I’ll see what I can do.

Quick question: which is the other “hack” you are using? Do you think you could send a link to where you got it from?
The thing with these is that sometimes different mods interfere with one another, and that may be what’s causing it to fail.
Another thing could be the version you are using. It’s been a while since I used these mods so I can’t remember exactly which version I had.
