Get a copy of Kubrick, boot from the LiveCD, then F4 to reach the command line - -
Try again, keeping a watch on dmesg to see if it gets far enough to export USB storage (even for a few seconds).

= = = =

I am expecting to receive a new computer with Win8.1-Pro pre-installed within a few hours.
But that doesn't mean I want to spend any more time with it than to learn how to delete it from the ssd.

States that PW not supported?
"Installs a pristine 3.4 (K3), 4.1.1 (K4), or 5.1.2 (KT) firmware; other devices (K1, K2, KDX, Paperwhite) are not supported!"
Should I try it anyway?

That only means the system can't de-brick a paperwhite.

I did not mean for you to use the Wizard to de-brick your Kindle.
I only mean for you to run Linux (rather than Win8) and escape from the Wizard to the command line by pressing F4.

At that time, you are running a Linux OS in ram (does not touch anything installed on your PC).
Then you have a chance of dealing with devices that come and go too quickly for Windows.

????
Press f4 **after** the LiveCD finishes booting.

And make sure the USB port on your computer your using for your Kindle is a USB-2 not a USB-3 version port!

It did boot far enough to show you the welcome screen -
That is something.

Give us a bit more information please, such as:
Manufacturer's name and model of the computer your using so we can look-up its technical details.

If not that easy to find, then try to get us a link to the device's description page or sales page.

Kubrick has been posted for over 2-1/2 years and you don't see that thread flooded with "does not work" posts.
So it is fairly safe to guess that it is something about the machine your trying to run it on.

One hint you already gave (IIRC) is that this device runs Win8.1 =
So one of the technical details of interest is the make and model name/number of the processor. If Win8.1 - you can find that on the PC device info page.
(yes, that could make a difference in a machine using UEFI boot rather than legacy boot.)

What OS on that one?

You may get that one before I figure out how to boot (and have it run) on a Win8.1 machine.

I'm sure if you really want to get your K back to life, you can find a computer/laptop running Win 7 (hopefully 32 bit, better) nearby (friend, etc.).

I must be doing something wrong!
At what stage do I press F4?
1 Boot with disc
2 Welcome to Kubrick screen
3 Next
4 Cancel
5 Shure you want to exit Kubrick

I am now running on Windows 7 32 bit
