My guess is the first half of 2009. It will have a plastic backing instead of glass and should be more rugged than the current crop of readers. I expect the software to be the same as the V3 with modifications for the larger screen.

Jinke is working hard to improve the software on the V3 including improved mobi, pdf, and ePUB support near as I can tell with PDF and ePUB coming from adobe like was done on the Sony products. (This is a prediction, not an announcement.)

How is Hanlin's current pdf/djvu support? Does it support zooming in?

Your source for this? Not to doubt you or anything (in fact, you're probably correct), but I don't think Jinke or lBook have said anything officially about the construction of the V9 so far.

PVI is the source of this screen and they have gone back to the drawing board instead of a planned release this fall. this is according to Astak sources.

Actually, on their web site Jinke do say the display is plastic:

http://www.jinke.com.cn/Compagesql/E...tail.asp?id=36

If the images they show are anything like the actual device, it may be somewhat better than the V3 in terms of controls - larger page turn buttons (though I do not understand why forward and back buttons are treated with the same importance) and also a 5 way navigator - that has got to make menus easier to work with.

No SDHC support.

I remarked this too. Very interesting. Next display generation from PVI may be on plastic basis. Or are they switching to plastic logic fabric?

The format support is obsolete. Maybe no SDHC support is also obsolete since they have more time now to work on it. Hopfully USB 1.1 and the weak battery are also obsolete.

They will have to compete (at least) with the Netronix EB-900, which also lists only SD support but includes two USB 2.0 ports and a 2100 mAh battery.

I agree that there is no reason at all for new devices not to support SDHC. However, the DR1000S is the only V9-like device out there and it does not officially support SDHC (although SDHC cards seem to work anyway).

This is the standard 9.7" screen from PVI, which has been delayed to switch to plastic.

I'm hoping Jinke can sort out the problems with the V9 in time. But, given Netronix's lack of support, I don't want one. Derek has been trying to get a hold of them now for way way too long and they won't respond to a support issue.

Netrontix is a conventional OEM, with little direct customer support. If Bookeen stays with Netronix for their hardware, this may end up as the Cybook Gen4.

That would imply a move from Gen3 running Linux to Gen4 running WinCE if Bookeen didn't change the embedded OS. I wonder if that would matter.

The hardware can run Linux or WinCE, and I agree that Bookeen would probably want to stick with Linux given its existing software base.
