"eReader" is a format not supported by the Sony. Don't buy it or you won't be able to read it. It's a format used mainly on PDAs - Palm, Pocket PC, etc.

Fictionwise support the Sony Reader in their "Multiformat" book offerings, but not in their books with DRM.

LRF books are only available in the multiformat (without DRM) category. Fictionwise does have eReader books available as well. You'll see "eReader (formerly Palm)" for those in that format.

I think, giving it more thought, that the original poster is incorrectly using "eReader" for the name of the Sony Reader, not referring to the "eReader" book format.

The device is called the "Sony Reader", not the "eReader". Don't call it the eReader, or people will think you mean the "eReader" book format!

Yes, I do think you are correct on the misuse of "eReader". I did misunderstand what was meant. If we use the wrong terms for what we mean, we'll be getting incorrect responses to the questions.

I was browsing through the Fictionwise site and I think they have a lot of good deals and a wider selection than the Connect store.

So if I plan to buy from Fictionwise and I have a Sony Reader, I have to choose "Multiformat", right?

What kind of format is that? And what is the difference between being a DRM or not???

Some (most) of their multiformat offerings are available for the Sony Reader. All new multiformat offerings are available for the Sony Reader. These are books and magazines (like Analog) that allow Fictionwise to distribute them without DRM. This means that no current best seller is currently available in multiformat.

Only the Sony Connect store sells DRM books for the Sony.

Now DRM is short for Digital Rights Management which is a restriction on the usability of the file. It can only be read on certain devices and by certain people (i.e.: you.) You may not transfer the book to someone else and it is restricted to devices that are registered to you and your account. Publishers believe that DRM protects their rights and ensures that everyone who wants the book pays for it. The Sony Reader supports only one type of DRM, their own DRM.

Multiformat = multiple formats
This means you can download the ebook and read it on just about anything, including the Sony Reader.

But it is also possible to buy an ebook in MSReader LIT format, and convert it one that can be used by the Sony Reader. I gave instructions here:

For DRM books, I download Adobe secured format from Fictionwise on my reader. It's not perfect but works. Currently I am enjoying "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman.

Microsoft Lit is way better. I was intimidate at 1st with the conversion process but if you have a Windows computer, Convertlit Gui and Caliber is the way to go. I have a Kindle now also so I started buying Mobi and using mobidedrm but now Caliber convert to Mobi, I'm back buying Lit books when I buy anything outside the Amazon store! I have bought only 1 Abode format book since Sony updated the reader to read drm Adobe and hated it, so I will never buy another one until they fix the reflow. I do read a lot of library books in Abode, but I don't mind since it's free!
