Maybe age has something to do with it, but I'm not as anal as I used to be.
The flecks in the top right corner are barely obvious and only while reading at night with the sidelights on. I'd be a little more patient with Sony since they are the ones who initiated the contact in the first place. You can probably followup with them after a few weeks (of processing time) and perhaps they can even re-direct your/our concern to a different dept. My dust spots aren't anywhere near as bad as you post, but you obviously use your reader a lot more than I do (at least at night) Since I use my reader as a research tool, its not that big of deal for me. However, the only thing I can think of that Sony might be able to do for us is swap the unit out with a Rev. "B" unit once the production line has been modified to correct the gaps (if any) Tonight I will blast some pressurized air and see if the dust specks are entering from the moldings corners. Igorsk was able to access the underside of the panel by carefully lifting the touch panel off the device without incident. The only thing holding down the touchpanel is re-seelable adhesive. Of course, you may void your warranty so I'd wait to see what Sony offers/does. |

How widespread is this problem? Its the only thing really putting me off from getting this product.

I've got them, too. I started out with just a single speck of dust towards the bottom when I got my 700 last month. Now there is a cluster of them forming near the top. It's not yet as bad as some here, but still irritating to read with at night. I mentioned the dust issue in a review at sonystyle.com last week, but for some reason they never posted my review. Hmm.
Between this and all the other screen problems, I've been pretty disappointed with the 700. If I could do it over, I'd hold out until the Kindle 2 and other readers are released this year. Last edited by debacler; 01-27-2009 at 07:42 PM. Reason: typo |

Dust Update...
Kindle 2? Ewww...
The fugly-ness alone turns me off. I'll keep my Sony7 Thank you very much. As for the dust... My understanding is that the touch panel needs to 'breath' so as to not form condensation or fog up from tempurature changes and could be by design. However after attempting to blast air into the reader and see if I could clear the underside of the touch panel it turns out that the unit is air-tight. I was not successful making any changes to a couple of flecks seen only at night against a dark background. ie. photo First I blasted air in the top right corner. That yielded Nada. Then I removed the memory cards and stylus and blasted air into those large openings and again Nada. I think this was present at manufacturing. If it gets worse then the dust is originating from within the unit and not outside as if a magical gust of wind swept some foreign particles into only the top right hand corner of your exquisite Sony reader... I'm tempted to open her up and just wipe the damn thing but I'm waiting to hear back from Sony. Over-all I'm still VERY happy with the reader and wouldn't trade for anything! Quote:

There hasn't been a huge outcry of despair on this forum of people with dust spots, so I don't think they are very widespread. |

Other then these dust spots I've been happy with it. But it's getting to the point where I can't read at night anymore and that was the reason for "upgrading" from my Fictionwise 1150 (Being backlit I could read at night with it as well).
I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if anything happens, if I don't hear from Sony by then I'll figure something else out. |

You're right! It was up for the day, but I think it may have been purged or burried? I'll submit a different one and see what happens. *update* I think I know what happened. I didn't use my correct mailing address and entered anything to test post and perhaps they pulled it for that reason, despite leaving a possitive review. *update 2* No purging, as the posts are dated sequentially. Something smells!!! Last edited by Server; 01-29-2009 at 08:09 PM. |

I used my correct address and other info when I added my review. I wrote a detailed review and checked that I had followed all the terms and guidelines posted. My opinion was that the 700 didn't live up to my expectations or, in some ways, to its predecessor. Some people may agree, some may not. There's no point in soliciting reviews if you don't want to hear all sides. It is Sony's site, so they can post what they want, but this behavior just seems childish.

Write to SonyListens@am.sony.com and ask them why this happened. I will back you on the occurrence and let see what they have to say. Also cc and contact Sony Consumer Relations http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/contact-relation.pl? as this is not fair practice in my opinion. If they invite you to write a fair and balance review of your purchase, you should have the right to opine on your findings. Unless you went overboard, I don't see why they would dlist your post. I will followup with them as well once I re-post my review. **UPDATE** I'm going to leave another psuedo-review on their site and then take a screen shot once it lists. I will then use the screen capture to pursue further if need be. I will even forewarn them in the post not to pull it OR ELSE!!!! Last edited by Server; 01-29-2009 at 07:53 PM. |

Interesting they would pull your review if they kept this one up:
"Overall: 1 out of 5 1 out of 5 Bostonian (read all my reviews) (read all my reviews) Location: Arlington, MA I've had this product for: less than a month $400 mirror Date: December 13, 2008 Pros: multi-format support, more memory Cons: a very expensive useless gadget "This is a $400 mirror. No back light, and highly reflective, so reading is impossible. Oddly enough, the menus have nice contrast, while the books have a yellowish background that makes reading very hard. Sony should come up with a PSR-600 HP reader (HP being my initials) with NO touch screen, no MP3 player and no black and white photo viewer, but the same internal memory and multi-format capabilities than the 700 model." 11 of 34 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful to you? Yes No (Report Inappropriate Review) Share this Review: Facebook Digg DelIcioUs " Especially since 11 of 34 people found it helpful. |

i don't get it. I gave the product 4 out of 5 and my post was pulled.
I'm waiting to see if the next one posts... but you're right, its intersting. reading between the lines, people who read the above post would assume the user was purely sour grapes and would automatically discredit the review. However, someone who give a positive review and spills the beans on real short comings, might be taken more seriously? The mere mentioning about dust and contrast might be the triggers, as was the case for sony to make initial contact here in these forums. hmmm... Time will tell but the fact remains, some posts (mine included) are being selectively pulled. |

They might be pulled for a certain time for them to make sure it isn't offensive. Check back in a day or two.
