James Hall's novels about a gloomy Florida loner named Thorn are fine, dark reads. This one features an ace villain named Butler Jack who takes a giant cruise ship and its 2,000 passengers hostage, and then gives them lectures on history and language while Thorn tries to find a way to rescue them. Under Cover of Daylight, in which we're told about the source of all his angst, was Hall's first Thorn story.

Night of the Loving Dead is the fourth in the Pepper Martin series by Casey Daniels. This was one of the earlier paranormal mystery series, starting not long after Sookie Stackhouse, in the mid-2000s. And although I'm usually not much on paranormal mysteries, I have warm feelings (but few distinct memories) about a couple of the early books that I read in DTB. For whatever that's worth years later.

Anyway, Loving has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 in the US/UK, and it's discountable at Kobo, so with discount code "Partners22" for 40% off, and stacked with a VIP discount, if you have that, it's only $0.53 out the door. The Brass Verdict is the second title in Michael Connelly's shorter, but probably as well known and awarded, Mickey Haller series. It is £0.99 today as part of the Kindle UK Daily Deal. Per SYKM, the first title in the series, The Lincoln Lawyer, won or was nominated for six awards (!) and this title itself won the 2009 Anthony Award for Best Mystery. And Harry Bosch is in this book too...enough that SYKM calls it the 14th in the Harry Bosch series as well.

I'm not totally sure about Perseverance Press (and am slammed for time right now and don't have time to research) and whether Janet Dawson's California Zephyr series should be considered conventionally published, but SYKM lists the four titles, and they are pretty picky. And Dawson's other, better-known, Jeri Howard series was conventionally published, including some award nominations. (And I've liked that series.) But if you are offended by this, skip the rest of the post .

OTOH, an omnibus of the four titles is free right now at Kindle US and UK, so if you try it and hate it, you're not out any money. And I like the premise of (again per SYKM) "a Zephyrette working on the California Zephyr between Chicago, Illinois, and the San Francisco Bay Area, in the early 1950s" as the protagonist. So I'm going to try it!
