Buzz Cut is the fifth in James W Hall's Thorn series. Per SYKM, it was a finalist for the 1996 Hammett Prize. It's free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009HI94CQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
A brutal hijacker,

A missing heiress,

And a luxury liner racing toward disaster...

In the quiet shallows of the Florida Keys, Thorn has made a home, tying fishing flies and trying to forget the violence of his past. Now Key Largo is his world. He fishes it, breathes it, makes love in it. Until a phone call from Miami changes everything plunging Thorn into the deep waters of madness and revenge...

In Miami, Thorn's best friend, Sugarman, is fighting for his life. While working security for a luxury liner plagued by theft, Sugarman was attacked by a man with a knife in one hand and 400,000 volts of electricity in the other. And when the M.S. Eclipse sets sail for the Caribbean, both Thorn and Sugarman are swept into a voyage of terror...where a madman hijacks the Eclipse, killing off crew members one by one...where the cruise line owner's missing daughter reappears, igniting the killer's passions--and Thorn's battered heart...where hundreds of lives hang in the balance, as only Thorn stands between a madman's rage and the ultimate carnage at sea.

Amazon.com Review
James Hall's novels about a gloomy Florida loner named Thorn are fine, dark reads. This one features an ace villain named Butler Jack who takes a giant cruise ship and its 2,000 passengers hostage, and then gives them lectures on history and language while Thorn tries to find a way to rescue them. Under Cover of Daylight, in which we're told about the source of all his angst, was Hall's first Thorn story.

Night of the Loving Dead is the fourth in the Pepper Martin series by Casey Daniels. This was one of the earlier paranormal mystery series, starting not long after Sookie Stackhouse, in the mid-2000s. And although I'm usually not much on paranormal mysteries, I have warm feelings (but few distinct memories) about a couple of the early books that I read in DTB. For whatever that's worth years later.

Anyway, Loving has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 in the US/UK, and it's discountable at Kobo, so with discount code "Partners22" for 40% off, and stacked with a VIP discount, if you have that, it's only $0.53 out the door. (Oh, and another 2.5% worth of Rakuten points, so basically an extra penny or two , if you do that too...)

Cemetery tour guide Pepper Martin has her hands full--two hot guys and ghosts who won't rest in peace until she solves their mysteries.

In Chicago for a cemetery conference, Pepper bumps into the specter of a young woman who demands Pepper's help. Before the woman died, she worked with Dan Callahan, the cute, absentminded, and very sexy researcher who once saved Pepper's life. The ghost insists Dan is in danger and Pepper is the only one who can help. But there's more to the story than Pepper suspects. She's about to tangle with a maniacal doctor and find herself pulled into the danger that comes along with crazy, obsessive love.

Today's Big Deal at Kindle UK is twelve crime/thriller books on sale. The publishers are not the usual big publishers, and not Amazon (Thomas & Mercer) itself either. I spotted a couple of Joffe, one Verve, and several from Bookouture. Too many to list, but here's the link to the sale page...

The Circle by Dave Eggers is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • A bestselling dystopian novel that tackles surveillance, privacy and the frightening intrusions of technology in our lives—a “compulsively readable parable for the 21st century”(Vanity Fair).

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO.

Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public.

What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

From the Roy Grace series by Peter James is #6 Dead Like You for only $1.99.

Quote:
When unsolved crimes resurface, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace faces a possible copycat killing.

The Metropole Hotel, Brighton. After a heady New Year's Eve ball, a woman is attacked as she returns to her room. A week later, another woman is assaulted. Both victims' shoes are taken by the offender . . .

Roy Grace soon realizes that these new cases bear remarkable similarities to an unsolved series of crimes in the city back in 1997. Dubbed 'Shoe Man', the perpetrator was believed to have attacked five women before murdering his sixth victim and vanishing. Could this be a copycat, or has Shoe Man resurfaced?

When more women are assaulted, Grace and his team find themselves in a desperate race against the clock to identify and save the life of the new sixth victim . . .

Quote:
In this #1 New York Times bestseller, California's newest private investigator, Detective Harry Bosch, must track down a missing heir while helping a police department connect the dots on a dangerous cold case.

Harry Bosch is California's newest private investigator. He doesn't advertise, he doesn't have an office, and he's picky about who he works for, but it doesn't matter. His chops from thirty years with the LAPD speak for themselves.

Soon one of Southern California's biggest moguls comes calling. The reclusive billionaire is nearing the end of his life and is haunted by one regret. When he was young, he had a relationship with a Mexican girl, his great love. But soon after becoming pregnant, she disappeared. Did she have the baby? And if so, what happened to it?

Desperate to know whether he has an heir, the dying magnate hires Bosch, the only person he can trust. With such a vast fortune at stake, Harry realizes that his mission could be risky not only for himself but for the one he's seeking. But as he begins to uncover the haunting story--and finds uncanny links to his own past--he knows he cannot rest until he finds the truth.

At the same time, unable to leave cop work behind completely, he volunteers as an investigator for a tiny cash-strapped police department and finds himself tracking a serial rapist who is one of the most baffling and dangerous foes he has ever faced.

Swift, unpredictable, and thrilling, The Wrong Side of Goodbye shows that Michael Connelly "continues to amaze with his consistent skill and sizzle" (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

I'm not totally sure about Perseverance Press (and am slammed for time right now and don't have time to research) and whether Janet Dawson's California Zephyr series should be considered conventionally published, but SYKM lists the four titles, and they are pretty picky. And Dawson's other, better-known, Jeri Howard series was conventionally published, including some award nominations. (And I've liked that series.) But if you are offended by this, skip the rest of the post .

OTOH, an omnibus of the four titles is free right now at Kindle US and UK, so if you try it and hate it, you're not out any money. And I like the premise of (again per SYKM) "a Zephyrette working on the California Zephyr between Chicago, Illinois, and the San Francisco Bay Area, in the early 1950s" as the protagonist. So I'm going to try it!

Oh yeah, titles include:
  • Death Rides the Zephyr
  • Death Deals a Hand
  • The Ghost in Roomette Four
  • Death Above the Line

ALL FOUR JILL McLEOD CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR MYSTERIES IN A BOX SET.

Zephyrette Jill McLeod is armed with good instincts and her knowledge of human nature, skills that serve her well when murder rides the train.

DEATH RIDES THE ZEPHYR

A COLD-BLOODED KILLER. A COLD, REMOTE CANYON. A MURDERED PASSENGER.

Zephyrette Jill McLeod spends her working days answering questions, taking dinner reservations, or providing first aid. She can usually solve any problem. But she wasn’t counting on a missing passenger—and a body in a sleeper car.

DEATH DEALS A HAND

WHO GETS THE DEAD MAN’S HAND? A HIGH-STAKES POKER GAME. DEATH HAS A SEAT AT THE TABLE.

Zephyrette Jill McLeod is back on the rails, riding the sleek silver streamliner west from Chicago to San Francisco. She can deal with almost anything, from an unexpected reunion with a long-lost relative to a troublesome passenger who likes to play poker—and has a shady past.

THE GHOST IN ROOMETTE FOUR

A GHOST ABOARD THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR?

Zephyrette Jill McLeod tells herself that shimmering light couldn’t possibly be a ghost. She doubts the evidence of her own eyes. But she can’t explain it. Does it have something to do with that body Jill found two months ago?

DEATH ABOVE THE LINE

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—MURDER.

Jill McLeod is playing a Zephyrette in a film noir. Dark conflicts swirl around cast and crew. A studio executive's visit brings hidden emotions boiling into view.

Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum in honor of those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II.

It is from this period of time that his murderer may well have come. But there are others on Guernsey with reason to want Guy Brouard dead: his wives, his business associates, his current mistress, the underprivileged teenagers he mentored—any of whom might have harbored a secret motive for murder. As family and friends gather for the reading of the will, Deborah and Simon St. James find that seemingly everyone on the history-haunted island has something to hide. And behind all the lies and alibis, a killer is lurking. In order to bring this person to justice, the St. James must delve into Guernsey’s dark history—both past and present—and into the troubled psyche of someone who may have exacted retribution for the most unspeakable crime of all.

In A Place of Hiding, bestselling novelist Elizabeth George marks new territory in the darker landscapes of human relationships. She tells a gripping, suspenseful story of betrayal and devotion, war and remembrance, love and loss...and the higher truths to which we must all ultimately answer.
