Calibre Import PDF & File Naming

Greetings,

Probably a silly question, but one that plagues me. When importing a PDF, Calibre doesn't use the full title, but only a limited amount of characters. I would like to use the full title in the file name. I know there must be a fairly easy way to do this in the Preferences, but I'm at a loss. Thanks for the help!

You have no control over the file names. The file names are always generated from the metadata fields, and then shortened to a maximum total path length in order to work across filesystems and OSes.

If you absolutely, positively must have control over the filenames, then calibre is unfortunately not for you.

Keep in mind that you needn't look at the filenames at all -- complex metadata queries are usually much more useful.

@zeitchef - the folder & file names within the library are not the names used when a book is Sent to a device or Saved to disk, those are defined by the user via templates.

It is possible to use Calibre as a catalog without any book format files, it will have the same library/author/book title folder hierarchy, but the book folder would only have a cover.jpg and the metadata.ofp (it's a backup for use in restoring the database). If you follow this route you'll lose some major features, such as integration with reader devices and third party apps like Calbre Companion, Calibre Cloud etc.

You would also have the problem of getting from calibre to the format files - which is not insurmountable. In Windows you could keep a shortcut (.lnk) in the book folder, it would have a 'calibre name' but it would target a folder or file that has a 'zeitchef name', similarly in OSX you could use an alias file, and in Linux perhaps you could use a symbolic link. Or you could put a file link to a folder or file that has a 'zeitchef name' into the Comments or a custom Long Text column.

If you want complete control of metadata in a PDF file you need Adobe Acrobat Pro, (which is quite expensive). Open the file and click on File=>Properties. You have a multitude of metadata data you can put in. Then just save the file and import into Calibre.
