Calibre unable to detect drive on Mac
OK so I posted about my odd issue before... Calibre detects my Kindle as long as the Kindle is plugged in before I open Calibre. Since that isn't how it is supposed to work, I am hoping someone can help me trouble shoot? I am low on the tech end of understanding but from what I can gather from searching I needed to check my console with my calibre in?
So I opened calibre, then opened console.app and then plugged in my kindle... this is what I get: 11/26/09 12:04:10 AM [0x0-0xd00d].net.kovidgoyal.calibre[118] File "calibre/gui2/device.pyo", line 100, in do_connect 11/26/09 12:04:10 AM [0x0-0xd00d].net.kovidgoyal.calibre[118] File "calibre/devices/usbms/device.pyo", line 574, in open 11/26/09 12:04:10 AM [0x0-0xd00d].net.kovidgoyal.calibre[118] File "calibre/devices/usbms/device.pyo", line 357, in open_osx 11/26/09 12:04:10 AM [0x0-0xd00d].net.kovidgoyal.calibre[118] DeviceError: Unable to detect the KINDLE disk drive. Try rebooting. ETA - ran the calibre debug -d Quote:
Any help or guidance would be wonderful! It works as is, but can be annoying to have to shut down and reopen to get it to see the device! Thanks! Last edited by patchymama; 11-26-2009 at 03:18 AM. |

Hmm, I've been getting a few problems with my Dr1000 & Sony PRS505. When I connect them, Calibre will see them but as soon as it tries to download to the device, it kicks the reader off and the Mac tells me I've unplugged my reader without shutting down. I then have to quit calibre, re plug in my reader, start calibre and it will then work.
This happens every second attempt, ie it will work fine the first time but not after that unless you quit Calibre and restart it. This started with 6.21 |

@patchymama: The way calibre device detection works is that it waits for the OS to detect and mount the device. But it will only wait for a fixed amount of time, before giving up. Probably something on your system is causing the OS to be very slow when auto mounting the device, which in turn causes calibre to give up. On the other hand if you connect the device form before, there's no such constraint.
@pthwaite: That's weird, I can't think of anything taht could cause that. There certainly haven't been any changes to the driver subsystem since 0.6.20 |

Thanks Kovid... looks like I may have fixed it by upgrading my growl... looks like it may have been slowing the OS down with errors.

I've had this issue with Sony PRS505 and iRex DR1000s - more often than not, if I attach the device to the computer using a USB connection, calibre will not recognise the device. I can't say if there are certain circumstances where it works (or not), just that it so often don't work that I by habit stop and restart calibre if I have to connect a device while it's running. Interestingly enough, Kindle has worked perfectly for me in this regard. I'm running OS X 10.6 BTW. I haven't used calibre enough on a Windows system to say if there is any difference for me.

Glad I'm not the only one
I just restart Calbre before I connect the the ebook. It then seems to download the days news feeds okay. ie leave Calibre on overnight. Shut it own in the morning and restart it and generally that works. H |
