First Publication Date Download

Hi,

I seem to remember an option towards the right hand side in the Configure Metadata Download section to allow the first publication date to be downloaded.

This option is not there now. So how can I download the first publication date of the book, not a specific edition?

The option was removed in one of the recent releases. The reason was that the service being used to get this no longer exists. Or maybe, no longer exists as a free service. I'm not sure if there is another good source. Goodreads appears to have it, but I don't know how accurate it is or if it is there for all books. I also don't remember whether the Goodreads metadata plugin looks at it or not. I'll have a look when I have a chance.

Yeah the xISBN service from worldcat.org that it used was discontinued. I dont know of a good free alternative.

Is there an alternaive that is not free? I won't mind to pay a fair amount.

There probably is something from worldcat itself, but IMO a paid service like that is better off in a separate plugin rather than in core calibre.

I had a look at the code in the Goodreads metadata source plugin. It will use the first publication date if that is displayed on the books page.
