100% useless because it does not support iOS.

What are advantages and disadvantages vs Calibre built in Content Server, which does web page and OPDS?

Flutter app. I assume iOS support can be easily added in future but for now they're focused on Android. At-least now we've FOSS alternative to proprietary "Calibre Companion"

It's open source. You're free to port it to iOS or whatever platform if you want.

It not even free to support iOS. Apple charges to publish on the App Store whereas Android has free options like F-Droid. And that doesn't even get into things like needing a Mac, needing test devices, etc.

It's also an add-on for Calibre-Web and not Calibre proper.

I'm a little unclear on whether this is a client or a server? Since it supports "Android only", I'm assuming it's a client, but then, how am I sending a book to my Kobo ereader device through it?

It's a client for a Calibre-Web server. But it integrates send2ereader for sending to an eReader by the looks of it.

CC has been really off the table for a few years now.

For those who have the older version (APK archived for safety), it still works on my device (TabA) with Calibre 8,x (talk about long term compatibility )

I sure don't understand the big deal. The price was really cheap compared to what we had to pay for DOS apps .

It's not about "still works for me". Proprietary projects have no real future and CC is an example of it.
Even if the current developer of FOSS app abandon/archive the repo, there is still some chance to fork and continue the project in future, which is much better than writing an app from scratch.

Personally I try to avoid proprietary stuff as much as possible. I believe, if we've active FOSS alternative there is no reason to use abandoned proprietary app.

From a brief look at the readme, it looks like the sending feature uses https://send.djazz.se, which is an open source tool hosted by djazz. You can use the service without the app, or self-host it yourself.

One thing to note about this companion app it that it seems to be designed for Calibre-Web, which is different than Calibre, and is designed for self-hosting.
