So, I figured it out.

It's very simple.
If you hit a down arrow 101 or more times it will go to recovery.
If you hit a down arrow 51 to 100 times it will go to EDL mode.
If you hit a down arrow 0 to 50 times it will boot normally.
How did you even figure that out?

OP doesn't have access to Fastboot or ADB though right? I only have the Leaf 2 else I would test it.

Well, you just read the code.
It's a bit like a crossword puzzle.
You say, "Oh, this part is obvious, it prints something out"
And you go from there putting the pieces together.
Giving the pieces names that mean something is the biggest part.

The bit that takes a character that you type in is something that I've never seen.
When you ask for a character most routines that I've ever seen say either, "Yeah, I've got a character for you" or "I have nothing, but let's wait a bit and I'll say no if there's still nothing."
This routine is like a cheesemonger that you ask for cheese and he says, "Maybe I have cheese or maybe I don't, but in either case it will take exactly five minutes to find out!"

Well all i must report that the device has passed on.
The magic smoke was let out by a shaky old man's hand and now the device is completely non responsive.
Off to the electronics recycling station now

Thanks for so much help maybe some one else will pickup where we left off.
