[OLD] Blind and Vision-Impaired Readers to Benefit from New Kindle Features in 2010

Quote:
To make Kindle more useful for the blind, the Kindle team is currently working on an audible menuing system so blind and vision-impaired readers can easily navigate to books unassisted, in addition to listening to books as they can already do today with Read To Me. In addition, a new super size font will be added to Kindle, increasing the number of font sizes from six to seven. This seventh font size will be twice the height and width of the current largest font. These new features are scheduled for release by the summer of 2010.

This little announcement is getting lost amidst all the furor over the Nook and other Kindle killers/wannabees/rivals, etc.

IMHO this move on Amazon's part signals the target audience for present & future Kindle sales & growth. Rather than compete with the "gotta have the new gadget b/c it's new" or "I'll buy anything from Apple" or "I'll buy the first reader with color" Amazon is solidly targeting readers who just want to read - not email, not phone, not surf. And now - readers with eye problems, and older readers. In other words, the baby boomers who are approaching/entering retirement age & who have the income to spend on readers & books - and who are less comfortable with using PCs than their children/grandchildren. On other boards I've seen discussions as to a collaboration between Amazon & AARP, similar to that of mobile phone companies that offer phones with LARGE displays & buttons that do ONE thing - make phone calls.

The result: this demographic (retirement & near-retirement age) is a fast growing segment of population. If Amazon can sell Kindles that work reliably out of the box, don't require a computer, and have that oh-so-easy one click purchasing of books, how can they lose? This is the market for a device that does only one thing - let you read books. This is the device that folks can give parents, grandparents, etc that they won't be constantly bugged to come over & fix. Load it up once a year at Xmas, birthdays, etc. and everyone wins.
This population also doesn't care about DRM (and obviously from recent news stories) has no idea what DRM is. If Amazon can deliver books automatically to a reader, they've got the market.

So, in answer to all the doom-sayers that predict a device that does only one thing has no future - Amazon is identifying a market for just such a device. For someone who loves to read and has been prevented by age or medical problems from reading pbooks, Kindle (whatever its pricing strategy) will be more than welcome.

By ignoring most of the world ? As long as the books on amazon are english only, they won't get far...

i love the talking kindle but dont recommend the we had the kindle app on my partners iPhone and to get it to talk we had to change the way swiping works. this wasn't out of choice ! now its take us hour to put his phone back to normal swiping

we ended up buying a kindle fire each as the app was giving us problems , were both disabled and the access-ability option is at the bottom we couldn't turn it off as we couldn't swipe the phone correctly with the accessibility option turned on .

it wanted 3 finger swiping to scroll down could we do it how it wanted nope

You may not like it but English is the dominant language in the book world (as well as others) so perhaps you should get your government to subsidise French only versions of eReaders to align with other "cultural" financial support for the Francophone segment of the world or follow the Chinese route (although they definitely have the numbers to do it) and develop versions purely for their own demographic...

Not specifically supporting the entire world doesn't seem to be having a terribly detrimental effect on Amazon so far... perhaps when the areas supported reach saturation then they may be more inclined to worry about the "rest of the world" but I wouldn't hold your breath...

In any case, the books on Amazon aren't only English... I've seen Russian, French, German and...

I wish they had kept the text to speech function when they went from the Kindle Keyboard to the Paperwhite.

Wasn't that a legal battle? Something about infringing on the audio book market?
