It works fine with 2.6.1. I have it working fine on a Vista laptop, and a Windows 7 desktop.

Thank YOU!!!!!! for all your hard work!! I have never tried any python scripts before this. Worked wonderfully for me!! Windows XP for me!
I get Amazon gift certificates cause family just doesn't "get" that just cause I have an ebook reader does not mean I can read the ebooks at Amazon - even if I tell them to go to Fictionwise. I also get Amazon gift certificates when I use my cc points. Now I can use those to buy ebooks at Amazon... I am SO thrilled!! Thank you again! Last edited by LauraLynn; 12-22-2009 at 12:18 PM. download a sample. Files that end in .azw are regular (PRC) mobi DRM. Files that end in .azw1 (OTA) or .tpz (USB transfer) are Topaz.

My understanding is that if you look at the product details and it doesn't list a file size, then it's Topaz. If there is a file size listed, it's Mobi.
Edit: Yes, all the files I've downloaded for K4PC have had a .prc extension, and I've downloaded both Topaz and Mobi files. Last edited by KarenH; 12-23-2009 at 04:08 AM. |

That's an indicator, but I've also heard that is not always true. I've not experienced it personally though. So far all the books I've purchased from Amazon have been mobi either by using the above method or by luck. |

You don't need an actual kindle though to check before you buy. Just open Kindle for PC and download a sample chapter. Then run unswindle.pyw on it. If the sample is topaz the script will tell you. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 12-23-2009 at 05:07 AM. |

....sorry I'm confused about formats .prc is the mobi format. For some reason I was thinking it was EReader. Last edited by kennyc; 12-23-2009 at 05:36 AM. |

Apparently on the kindle itself the files are the way you described them azw or tpz. Since I don't own a Kindle I don't know. I do know how they appear in Kindle for PC and for some reason they chose .prc as the extension for both topaz and azw formats. I have actually bought a normal encrypted book and had success with the script and I downloaded a sample of a book I knew to be tpz and sure enough the script told me that it was beyond it's ability because it was tpz. |

I open the samples with UltraEdit, and the TPZ one's will say TPZ0 on the first line. As stated in an earlier post, the Mobi files will say BOOK MOBI in the first few lines also.
All files coming from Kindle For PC and grabbed from a backup of the iPhone/IPOD Touch are all PRC extension. Stew EDIT: And Ereader files are PDB. Last edited by stewball; 12-23-2009 at 10:12 AM. |
