Arrow Before I buy, can the Nook Classic do this?

I've got my eye on a Nook Classic, but it needs to be able to at least handle the following things. If the Classic doesn't work, I'll consider the Simple Touch, but I really like the replaceable battery.

* Can you open up this doc and page through it at a reasonable speed? Note that you'll probably have to decompress on your PC first.

* Does it really become a normal Android 1.5 tablet after rooting? Like with a command shell and/or whatever 1.5 app you want to use? Or are there restrictions?

* Does it charge only through the USB port?

* Is the charge time longer when USB charging vs. wall+USB charging?

* Can you browse this HTML tree? Start with how\index.html (I removed all PDFs)

* Are there native or free DOC/DOCX/XLS/XLSX editors? Viewers?

To answer just one of your questions:

It does not become a "normal" Android 1.5 tablet after rooting. Most Android apps will not run properly on it.

The trouble is, the eink screen is not a touchscreen, but android apps don't know that. So, for example, if the android app has a button in the middle of the screen, you will see it but you won't be able to press it.

Only apps specifically written for the Nook Classic will work, and there aren't many of those.

And the Simple Touch?

I don't have one, so I don't know first-hand, but my guess is that most normal android apps should run OK on it, if it's rooted.

Yep I saw a video of Angry Birds, albeit very laggy.

Anyone know the answers to the other questions?

Looks like someone is adding a touchpad app for the Nook Classic:

I've seen that touchpad app, and not to dig at the project starter, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it; there's no real progress since they said what they planned to do.
I really wouldn't recommend the NOOK classic if you think it's going to be further developed on in the future, people just, sadly, aren't interested in it anymore.
If, on the other hand, you want audio capability or a colour touchscreen, then go for it. Then again, you might be better suited towards a NOOK color when it's dropped down in price.
And your point about the replaceable battery, they don't even manufacture them anymore as far as I know and you can't buy them from the BN site. Failing a third-party battery, its a moot point.

They've got plenty of third party batteries on Amazon/eBay, but I agree with you: the lack of a good, finished touchscreen app concerns me.

Anyone know the answers to the other questions in regards to the Simple Touch?
