I do like having color covers during sleep. And it is nicer on comics even if I don't think it's a necessity. But it's nice to have and I don't care as much about the lost contrast or graininess as I thought I would. |

I'd read comics on a big tablet screen. Even the reMarkable and Elipsa were poor.
I can't even remember ebooks with colour. I have paper books with colour, but none are novels, plays, history, biographies. Mostly larger format books that wouldn't work on a 7" screen and the colour eink is too poor for that content. |

I've seen both in person. The Colorsoft goes for a higher contrast display so colours are snappier but details in the brighter and darker areas are muddy/lost while the Libra Colour goes for lower contrast but better detail at the expense of muted colours. It's a trade off and the two companies made different choices. Which choice was correct? That's up to the end user's eyes.

I have no desire for a color e-ink device. I don't read comics, manga, etc.

I moved from the reMarkable 2 to a reMarkable Pro and I am very happy with it. Unlike the kaleido screens I tried on Pocketbook devices (Eo, Inkpad Color 3), the screen is brighter and more vivid. I use it to read the daily newspapers and the rendition makes me happy, which is more than what I say about the news contents :\ .

I have a Libra Colour and it has become my main device. I don't consider myself the target audience, as I read novels and short stories pretty exclusively. I do agree that criticism of the current generation's color screens is valid.
For instance, I see a fair difference in the screen vs black and white devices when reading outdoors on my back porch. I don't consider the grayish screen a big enough problem to get up and search for another device though. It's fine. All in all, I enjoy the novelty of seeing all my covers in color, and that's good enough for me. The muted color scheme doesn't bother me, and I always read with a backlight on. It's really not a bad device at all. Now there is an use case where I intentionally chose a black and white device over color. My "purse reader" is a 6 inch device I use while sitting outside in my car on lunch (in very bright light). I did not see fit to pay extra to have a worse experience there, so I went with a regular screen over the Clara Colour. TL;DR: For me, the color devices are pretty great. But if you read outdoors often, maybe stay away! |
