Question Having trouble charging the first time

Bought a PRS-300 for my wife for Mother's Day. It has been plugged into the USB for over 24 hours. The red light is still on and the "Do Not Disconnect" message is showing. What else can we do?

If the battery on a PRS is totally dead (which it shouldn't be if it's new, but strange things sometimes happen in shipping/storage) there can be problems getting it to charge off of USB. You need to use an AC adapter. These are available from Sony for insane prices, from various third-party vendors at wildly varying prices and levels of quality, and from all of the usual suspects. AC adapters for the Sony PSP portable game console reportedly also work, but I don't have any first-hand experience there. After the frustration of checking every local GameStop for PSP adapters, I just broke down and bought the Sony charger.

I should mention that said Sony charger is rated at 2 amps. Why an ebook reader would need to pull that much current, I have no idea, but that's what the charger can supply. I don't know how dependent it is on having that particular rating.

I'm with Worldwalker, Kjt. I had major problems with my Sony when I first had it just over a year ago. On sound advice here, I got an AC wall charger and the reader has worked like a dream ever since. Not the hint of a glitch. Good luck. Neil

kjt, does the PC go into sleep or hibernation mode? The moment that happens the power to the PC's USB connections are cut until the PC is powered back to awake status.

While the reader is plugged into a dormant USB drive it will draw power from it's battery to keep the reader on. Result is a battery that goes flat or never charges.
