Kobo on sale for $99; others to follow?

People have been saying e-readers would be priced under the hundred dollar barrier before Christmas, and it's happening, with Kobo (probably the smallest market share) going first.

http://techcrunch.com/2010/10/25/in-...-book-readers/

It will be interesting to see if they all drop to cash in on holiday spending, and to see if prices stay under $100 after the first of the year.

I got an email about this last night. I like the touch screen ereaders but Ido not want to pay over $100 for them. At the moment I am using an aluratek, its not a touch screen but they were willing to sell me a reader for under $100. I am watching and waiting for a touch screen reader for under $100.

I wish it was the new Kobo, but unfortunately, it's the old one. So I'll pass on it.

Yes, it is the clear out price on the original Kobo. Fortunately, Kobo will be updating the reader for a bit longer, and some (but not all) of the features in the new WiFi device will show up on this one as well.

It pretty much sold out in Canada when it was announced at this price.

There's also the new Jetbook Mini. Unfortunately it's hopelessly crippled when it comes to format support, supporting only plain text files, and FB2, which is a format used almost exclusively in countries where the Cyrillic alphabet is used.

More accurately it would be the ALuratek Libre (Ectaco Jetbook) or the jetbook lite being the first e-reader of the current age to go under 100$.

Very curious to see how things pick up in terms of community modification come this post-holiday season with the growing amount of ereaders in the wild.

Curiously enough, Spain has it as its main format de facto as well.

That's interesting - I didn't know that! Do you know of any reason why ePub hasn't become the Spanish standard, as it seems to have done in the rest of Western Europe?

Well, ePub has become the standard, at least the corporate one for bookstores... but users outright ignore it, because they prefer to download the books for free, outraged by the high prices of ePub and the ADE software. In Spain not-for-profit transmission of content is not illegal, and that has been confirmed by many instances of jurisprudence.

That's interesting. I was aware that a former Eastern bloc country (I think Bulgaria) doesn't recognize music copyrights, but I'm surprised that Spain doesn't recognize them for eBooks.

Spain recognizes copyrights for e-books, but Spain also permits private, not for profit copying of copyrighted works. There have been a couple of cases suggesting that p2p copying is permissible, although I don't know if this is definitive.
