I gave up after clicking on two of the books and finding zero information about the plot, just review brags where proper blurbs should be.

Given the covers that I've seen, these look like typical romance fantasy books with the 1/2 naked guy prominently (taking up most of the cover) displayed on the cover.

These are definitely paranormal romances (emphasis on the romance) so if that's not your cuppa, they won't appeal to you.

Oh, I'm quite fond of some series that get labeled PNR. I'm just not interested in scooping up a batch when all the author will say about them is "look at the great reviews my books got!" Couple that with generic covers and a generically meaningless series title, and she's quite literally giving me no reason to pick them up... even for free.

I have the same issue with paperbacks that splash a photo of the author across the back cover instead of saying something about the contents. I don't care what the author looks like; it has no bearing on what's between the covers.

Let's see - where I'm concerned books best avoided seem to have covers that feature one or more of the following:

* A half-naked guy (front or back view)
* A skinny female carrying one-handed a weapon that looks like it weighs at least half her weight
* Tattoos (either sex)
* Females in impractical floaty long dresses
* A female in an anatomically uncomfortable pose
* The author's name sounds made-up
* Animals that aren't livestock
* Corsets worn on top of other clothing
* Evening wear worn as day wear
* A pseudo-historical background that mixes 21st century gender roles with, say, Victorian values

Any one of these set the PNR alarm bells ringing and it will take some serious prodding for me to bother with them even if they're free.

I'll make exceptions for authors I've already read and enjoy like Patricia Briggs.

I was mostly that way too, but then I ran across the Markhat series, by Frank Tuttle.

Example of the old style cover....
https://smile.amazon.com/Banshees-Wa...ywords=markhat

He's fixed most of the older covers to something he thinks is more representative of the stories. But before when I recommended them I kept having to tell people it's not actually porn. It's a Gunsmoke Fantasy world, and one I really liked. No porn or half naked men in the story at all.

And even now I don't agree with his cover choices. I read it more as a Western with fantasy elements, not like 1920's flapper era.

I still tell people they just need to ignore the covers.

That's a terrible cover. The problem is that we see a cover like that and we don't even bother reading the description.

Yup.

One of my favorite series, and one I normally wouldn't have even given a second glance. Except that I saw someone's review that made me think the story would be right up my alley. And it was.

That one isn't too bad as half-naked men go - it's more a case of wondering where the chest rug and medallion went than wondering how many hours the model had spent in the gym. It's covers like the Sarah Humphreys referenced upthread I object to. Never having been a fan of romance novels (or indeed anything marketed as chick lit) I avoid anything that looks like it's been written to a formula based on the latest bandwagon.

Looks like they're not available in the UK store...

This may not be new news, but I just noticed there are a bunch of "tor.com originals" for 0.99 and some for 2.99 on amazon.com.
ETA - The $0.99 ones appear to be short stories.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...r.com+original

These two look interesting....
A Human Stain ($0.99)
Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/Human-Stain-T...qid=1486074693
Good Reads - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...-a-human-stain

River of Teeth ($2.99)

The $0.99 ones are available in full on the Tor.com website. I save them to Pocket to read on my Kobo. You could probably use the Send to Kindle browser extension also.

Here's a link to "A Human Stain" by Kelly Robson:
http://www.tor.com/2017/01/04/a-human-stain/

Usually pretty good for free or not, and DRM-free provided you avoid the KFX format.

Someone recommended Anthony Ryan's The Waking Fire to me, and I was surprised to find it on $1.99 sale when I looked it up at Amazon US and Kobo.

Description:
Spoiler:
The New York Times bestselling Raven's Shadow Trilogy was a perfect read for "fans of broadscale epic fantasy along the lines of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire novels."* Now, Anthony Ryan begins a new saga, The Draconis Memoria...
Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Trading Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from captive or hunted Reds, Greens, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that bestow fearsome powers on the rare men and women known as the Blood-blessed.

But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighbouring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly. The Syndicate's last hope resides in whispers of the existence of another breed of drake, far more powerful than the rest, and the few who have been chosen by fate to seek it.

Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered Blood-blessed who finds himself pressed into service by the Protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted lands in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an Ironship cruiser whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.

As lives and empires clash and intertwine, as the unknown and the known collide, all three must fight to turn the tide of a coming war, or drown in its wake.

All three books of Wesley Chu's "Tao" series (as well as his The Rise of Io) are on sale for $1.99 at Amazon right now. I have no idea for how long or what countries are included.

The Lives of Tao

The Deaths of Tao

The Rebirths of Tao

The Rise of Io
