Question Strange behaviour of TOC for one character

I've made several ePub-books in Esperanto. The special characters (ĉ ĝ ĵ ŝ ŭ ...) do not give any problem after import in Calibre. But in one particular book all the ŭ-characters are substituted by a Chinese character. I cannot figure out why. In all my other books the ŭ-characters in the TOC show how it should be.

I've looked to the original toc.ncx file in the ePub over and over again, and I see no difference in comparison to other toc files that behave properly.

The problem is visible after I add an ePub book to Calibre, before any conversion to another format.

Does someone have an idea where to look? Thanks!

Make sure toc.ncx is correctly encoded in UTF-8

Yes, I've checked that. It is UTF-8...

And by the way, the TOC shows perfectly in Sigil, EpubReader, Stanza ... but somehow Calibre acts in an other way...

Thank you for having fixed this!
But a similar problem remains with the metadata. In the ePub they are utf-8, but somehow Calibre interprets them otherwise.

This is what the metadata shows:
<dc:title>El verva vivo ĵurnalista</dc:title>

And this is what Calibre shows:
El verva vivo 警urnalista

Shall I open a ticket for this also?

The problem is only partionally solved. The TOC is now perfect utf-8 but after convertion from epub to mobi it is wrong again. I have created a ticket.

Stick an encoding declaration in the OPF file and you wont have this problem.
