New Cybook Ocean, 8" ebook reader, first look
Bookeen have announced a new 8" EInk reader on their blog.
Looks pretty cool, eh? 8" 768x1024 screen 4GB storage Frontlight Last edited by pdurrant; 10-31-2013 at 06:08 AM. |

Yep, looks pretty sweet. Pity about the low resolution (for an 8" device anyway), or I'd be tempted to go back to my roots; my first dedicated reader was an original 64M Cybook Gen3.
As it is, I'll stay with my AuraHD. |

Ooh sweet! More info on their blog http://bookeen.com/blog/tag/cybook-ocean/ The resolution is 768 x 1024px compared to Kobo Aura's 1440 x 1080px which is a bit low but for 160 euros I'm severly tempted. And seeing as I just sold my Kobo Aura... A deal-breaker will be how much it weighs.

Looks rather thick (dimensions, not intelligence), or is that just the photo ...........

It's 7 mm thick compared to the Kindle paperwhites 9 mm.

8" reader with frontlight and physical page turn buttons. If it wasn't for the resolution I would buy this in an instant.

Resolution is a downer, but this is looking very tempting. Since B&N's new ereader is a no-go I'm more interested in this.

Resolution isn't that bad. It's 160 dpi, around the same as the Kindle Touch. OK, lower than readers such as the KPW1 and KPW2, but certainly not unusable.
Maybe I've missed it, but does this reader have a touch screen? |

Putting page turn at the very bottom of a 8" device isn't that great. Wish they were on the side instead. And yeah, the picture does look weird. I can't even hold my iPad Mini like that.

I love the phrase, "mechanical buttons or tactile interface". 9 weeks battery life looks good.

Contradictions in the Blog about run times.
It is interesting to note that there are contradictions here regarding the run time. At the very beginning of the blog there is this line.
"And with 9 weeks of autonomy, you can enjoy reading without worrying about having to stop to charge your battery." And a paragraph or two down there is this line. "Like all the Cybooks, the Cybook Ocean offers a record autonomy: read without worrying about recharging for up to 10 weeks." Interesting to note that they can not seem to get the correct information out. Which is true, 9 weeks or 10 weeks... regards Jack |

What's the problem? Even the weaker battery duration of nine weeks sounds very good.

Both are correct. Depends on whether you do 27 or 30 page turns per day.
In other words: in practice battery life will be much shorter than either 9 or 10 weeks. |

There is more controversy in the blog. They start with saying that the Cybook Odyssey Frontlight will be out in November and the Ocean with Christmas. And further on, they say the Odyssey will be out half October and the Ocean in November...
