Marriott Watson, H. B.: The Devil of the Marsh. v1. 9 Dec 07
H.B. Marriott Watson was an author and journalist, writing more than forty books, including seventeen short story collections and a collection of essays. He specialised in adventures and historical romances, but he also wrote mystery, fantasy and some supernatural fiction.
Though not a prolific writer of supernatural fiction, a couple of his stories, notably “The Devil of the Marsh” and “The Stone Chamber” are regarded as classics of their kind. I'll post more of his stuff (I'm working on The Stone Chamber next) as I find it. I really enjoy his vivid descriptions--great atmosphere in this short story. About this short story: The narrator keeps his late night tryst with the beautiful lady of the marsh. Through the mist, he glimpses things that make him wonder if this is a good choice. Still he wants her. But wait, it turns out that there were others that walked down this same path...
