Split tags at ";" on import

I have a small number of ebooks which came already tagged as "tag1; tag2; tag3". This is not recognized by calibre and the whole string is taken as one tag instead of splitting it.

Can I make calibre recognize this during the import by some setting or tweak? Or is this going be a feature request?

Not an exact solution

for books with these 'composite tags'
Select the books. tap 'E' (for bulk metadata edit)
Use the Search and replace tool on the {Tags} field to break them apart
