Yes, changed chapter_title_strip_pattern is applied during Update Always.

chapter_title_strip_pattern is generally used (by me, at least) with add_chapter_numbers. Strip off all leading numbers, then put them back on.

However, that doesn't help you if you are bothered by "2. Chapter 1: Title" when it is, in point of fact, the second chapter.

You might be able to get what you want with a look-ahead pattern for chapter_title_strip_pattern. Can't say I've remember ever trying.

So on SV(and probably SB. I think I might of also seen dice on QQ), you can throw dice and apparently FanFicFare just doesn't include thrown dice in any capacity that I know of.
Example: https://forums.sufficientvelocity.co...9#post-5392497

Also show_timestamps for fiction.live doesn't seem to work.

Those are appearing outside the post body as FFF currently defines it.

It may or may not be feasible to include the svg image dice, but including at least the legend and info should be. I will investigate.

That does appear to have gotten broken. Fix in the next test version.

yeah, I was just hoping to be able to strip the numbers only when they are already present in the title. I will experiment more.

Question: If I update an ffnet fic too soon after getting the notification, I tend to get a "already has [current number of chapters] chapters," even though going to the first chapter of the fic already shows the new ones in the chapter list. Why would this happen?

The first thought that came into my mind was "How soon is too soon?"

The next thought was whether you were using the webcache. The obvious thing would be that FFF would not find it in the cache, you would look at the page and say "But it is there". That updates the cache and hence FFF finds the update when you try again.

I have noted that sometimes when a fic is updated, in the first chapter doesn't show the actual nuber of chapters. But that happens when the url of the fic has the tittle.

Examples:
URL with the tittle:
Code:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3566724/1/The-Dark-Lords-of-Nerima
URL without the tittle:
Code:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3566724/1/
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3566724
If you're using browser cache to download from ff.net try visiting the first chapter without the tittle, and reload the page refreshing the cache with CTRL + F5 or CTRL + R

But if for some reason the first chapter of the fic isn't didn't have in the chapter list the latest chapter you can enable use this option in personal.ini:

Code:
[www.fanfiction.net]
## ffnet used to have a tendency to send out update notices in email
## before all their servers were showing the update on the first
## chapter. It generates another server request and doesn't seem to
## be needed lately, so now default it to off.
check_next_chapter:true

Also, there is the issue that the FFN site metadata often doesn't update to reflect a new chapter count for an hour or more even when the new chapter is visible on the site.

Until the metadata updates on the FFN website to reflect the increased chapter count, FFF won't find it even if the page is in the browser cache (i.e. you will get an error that the fic doesn't need to be updated because it already has XX chapters).

I usually give it at least an hour after the new chapter shows up on the FFN website before I try to run an update in FFF. I have a couple of fics (pretty long ones) I follow that I know from experience may take up to 3-4 hours for the metadata to update.

John Maverick and steltek are correct. This has happened on and off for years. It's why we have the check_next_chapter setting available.

Also, look at the first and last items under Notes on the Browser Cache Page.

I will add check_next_chapter:true to my ffnet section and see if that helps in the future.

The XenForo2 dice roller used by SB/SV is only available when you edit your own posts. As mentioned, the rolls appear outside post text and are displayed using in-line <svg> images. And, for SV at least, the dice rolls only appear to logged in users.

A couple examples I've found:
https://forums.sufficientvelocity.co...9#post-5392497
https://forums.spacebattles.com/thre...#post-62740807

QQ uses a different dice roller that doesn't use SVG images and the rolls do appear inside the post text. Only some CSS is needed for that one.

The other two supported XenForo2 sites don't appear to use the dice roller.

FFF generally removes most HTML attributes to normalize appearance across sites. Inline <svg> images are made up of possibly dozens of different tags using even more possible attributes, so normal FFF behavior wrecks them pretty thoroughly.

I can't find any past mention of stories with inline <svg> images (<img>s using SVG files, yes, <svg> images, no), so I'm reluctant to change a bunch of stuff to try and make them work here since it's really just a nicety.

I'm going to look at it some more, but that's where I am now.

New Test Version Posted

2021-03-09
- Fix show_timestamps option in adapter_fictionlive
- Add include_dice_rolls option

Code:
## SV/SB sites include a dice roller that can attach dice roll results
## to a post. These are outside the actual post text. Setting
## include_dice_rolls:true will include a text version of those rolls
## in the FFF chapter that should be usable for all ebook readers.
## Setting include_dice_rolls:svg will keep the inline <svg> images of
## the rolls. It is the user's responsibility to also add
## add_to_keep_html_attrs and add_to_output_css settings to make them
## appear correctly. (include_dice_rolls:svg did *not* work in most
## ebook readers I tested with, even with appropriate attributes and
## css.)
## NOTE: SV requires login (always_login:true) to see dice rolls.
#include_dice_rolls:false
QQ dice rolls are included in the post test already, however, they can be better styled with:
Code:
[forum.questionablequesting.com]
add_to_output_css:
 .roll { display: flex; flex-wrap: wrap; }
 .cube { display: flex; margin-left: 5px; }
If you want to try include_dice_rolls:svg, these are the settings I was using:
Code:
[base_xenforo2forum]
add_to_keep_html_attrs:,style,xmlns,height,width,d,x,y,transform,text-anchor,cx,cy,r

[forums.sufficientvelocity.com]
add_to_output_css:
 /********* public:diceRoller_dice.less ********/
 .dice_container{margin:10px;padding:10px;width:800px;max-width:90%%}
 .dice_controls .button--icon--delete{float:right}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg{font-size:0.8em;font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .top_face path{fill:#fff}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .top_face #roll{fill:#d8dfe5;stroke:#c9d2da;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .back_face path{fill:#ccdbe7}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .back_face .pip{fill:#abb9c5;stroke:#9cacbb;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .front_face path{fill:#dde7ef}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .front_face .pip{fill:#bac5d0;stroke:#abb9c5;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}

[forums.spacebattles.com]
add_to_output_css:
 /********* public:diceRoller_dice.less ********/
 .dice_container{margin:10px;padding:10px;width:800px;max-width:90%%}
 .dice_controls .button--icon--delete{float:right}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg{font-size:0.8em;font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .top_face path{fill:#5273a9}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .top_face #roll{fill:#fff;stroke:#fff;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .back_face path{fill:#395076}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .back_face .pip{fill:#fff;stroke:#fff;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .front_face path{fill:#415c87}
 .diceRoller_dice_svg .front_face .pip{fill:#fff;stroke:#fff;stroke-width:1;stroke-opacity:0.5}
You can use one set of CSS for both SV & SB, but because they will appear a little different due to differences in the SVG code.

My experience was that keeping the inline <svg> did not work correctly in Kindle, FBReader on Android or DropBox on iPad. It did work in Calibre's reader and iPad iBook.

Just curious after looking at the filename structure: could FFF support a fic with more than 9999 chapters?

It should.

If you can point to a story with more than 7500 chapters, I will worry about it enough to find out.

I figure that if one does exist, it'd be a troll fic (like how the longest fanfic in the world was just the same phrase pasted a zillion times )
