You need to regularly update the certificates on a device if you want to use the web for general purposes. The trend is to go for shorter expiration dates, which means that devices with certificates that cannot be updated become useless even more quickly than before. For me, this is the number one problem with platforms that are orphaned by their manufacturers.

Root certificates are valid for many years for this reason. The certificates on the websites themselves, that are signed by intermediate certs that are in turn signed by those root certs, are the ones that rotate regularly and have had their valid lifetimes shortened.

There have been quite a few root certificates that have been invalidated for key length issues and lazy sysadmins who did not keep up with the changes. Currently there is a move to 3072 or 4096 bit keys from 2048 bit keys and quite a few bits of software will no longer accept a 1024 bit certificate as being secure. If you are a developer and using code signing, you may remember that back in 2021, the minimum key length for a code signing certificate changed to 3072 bits.

This is a useful thread. I didn't realise that LineageOS is only minor help for keeping devices updated, and therefore secure.

So, to that end I'm thinking laterally, since I do need to both protect my eyes and get things done without getting digitally robbed by using an outdated device online.

One approach could be to forego integration and go back to displays that are separate to the device. There are eink monitors and eink tablets that can act as monitors. Both of these ruin the ability to be mobile somewhat. Maybe that could be improved.

The only example I can think of an ereader allowing much user control was the Nook ST hacking projects. Joey Castillo's OpenBook is another project like this.

Other news updates:
Hibreak rooted; potentially allows slightly longer updates from Lineage rather than relying on the manufacturer:

I have a rooted A5 Pro. I think I'm going to try flash Lineage OS GSI on it. From what I've read it SHOULD work. I'm going to hit the fellow up who did it on the A9 Pro over on Mastadon and see if he has any advice.

The reason I want to is I dislike the Vision rom that comes with the A5 Pro. The English language is spotty in the system menus, and I dislike not being able to completely customize the lock screen.

I plan to do backups so I can recover or revert if it's not good enough, but keen to see how it goes.

It'll be great if you succeed. I have an A5 Pro that I'm not using. I'd love to install LineageOS on it.

You'd need to port the e-ink functionality. Maybe the .apk provided by Damien in the XDA thread for rooting the A9 will work on the A5 Pro, too.

Yeah true. I haven't touched Java in years and never even looked at Kotlin, but I feel if I had to make some tweaks I could stumble my way through it. Time is a little tight at the moment as I'm doing house reno's so it may be some time before I make any progress!
