Zola, Émile: Rom.V1. [German] 4.9.2011

Über Émile Zola, den Urvater einer auf dokumentarischer Recherche beruhenden Romankunst, muss man hier nicht viel sagen. Sein Hauptwerk ist zweifellos die 20-bändige Romanserie "Rougon-Macquart" (im Forum von insider vollständig eingestellt), in der Zola 20 Jahre Sozialgeschichte des Zweiten Kaiserreichs entrollt.
Sein Spätwerk ist - wohlgemerkt: gemessen an der hohen Qualität des Hauptwerkes! - deutlich schwächer; dem Goetheschen Dictum "Bilde, Künstler, rede nicht!" folgt es zu oft nicht, frönt stattdessen zunehmend einem deklamatorischen Verkündigungsstil, wie schon der Rahmentitel seines letzten, unvollendeten Romanzyklus, "Vier Evangelien", erkennen läßt.
Gleichwohl sind natürlich auch seine letzten sechs Romane besser als das meiste, das zu dieser Zeit geschrieben wurde.

"Rom" ist der zweite Band aus Zolas zweitem, dreibändigen Romanzyklus "Drei Städte" und erschien 1896.
Den ersten Band, "Lourdes", hat - ebenfalls - insider bereits im Forum eingestellt.
