Browne, Maggie: The Book of Betty Barber (illus-Rackham). v1. 09 Sep 2019

THE BOOK OF BETTY BARBER by Maggie Browne
Pseudonym of Margaret Hamer Andrewes (? – ?)
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867–1939)

The Book of Betty Barber first publication is cited as 1900 by Carolyn Sigler on p. 79 of Alternative Alices (1997). (Scan of physical book shows no date, but illustrations are dated 1900/1901.)

----------
Three persons find a school exercise-book inside a hollow tree, and thus the story begins. Betty Barber, the owner of the book, has recorded some decided opinions and observations, which are destined to cause havoc here in these imaginary realms of Rhyme Land, Music Land, Paint Land, Sum Land, and other domains.

The fantastical, surreal aspects of this story might call to mind the writing of Lewis Carroll and other authors of sense-and-nonsense books for children. Eighteen full-page illustrations by Arthur Rackham add a comic flair to the production.

----------
Maggie Browne (pseudonym of Margaret Hamer Andrewes), active from 1884 to 1900, was the author of Two Old Ladies, Two Foolish Fairies, and a Tom Cat; The Book of Betty Barber; Wanted–a King; Pleasant Work for Busy Fingers; Plays for Little Folks; and others. No biographical data could be found for this writer.

----------
Text and illustrations were obtained from the Internet Archive. Embedded font for titling. Chapter headings are cross-linked to interactive Table of Contents; List of Illustrations provides links to images. Editing notes available inside the book.

----------
Now available for young readers, for fans of Lewis Carroll, and for lovers of Arthur Rackham. Enjoy!
