As far as anyone can tell, this is NOT a calibre issue, rather it's one related to Windows 10 and Kindles (and possibly other USB devices).

I've not had a problem with my H2O, Kindle Touch, PW3, K3, or the original Kindle tablet being recognized with Windows 10.

Reboot (a cold boot is best when there is hardware missing)
Attach the Kindle
Open the Device Manager (right-click the Windows Logo, formerly the Start button: Manage devices. Look for disabled/problems (Yellow) in the USB section.
Right-click (on that): Uninstall

Then highlight the computer (upper-Left): Action: Scan for hardware changes.

Let it settle out before doing anything else

Thank you but your suggestions did not change anything. Windows 10 DOES recognize the Kindle as my Drive F. Are you suggesting that Windows 10 can find the Kindle PW as a drive in Explore but does not communicate this to Calibre? Thanks.

Might it be a difference between Win10 upgrades and Win 10 fresh installs, after an upgrade my devices were all there just as before. But a couple of callers have had issues with USB and BT devices after a Fresh Win 10 install - fixed by 'introducing' them to Win 10 1 by 1. The devices are excluded from calibre.

Same issue here on a machine upgraded from Windows 7.

While I appreciate David's advice to do a clean install of Windows 10, I don't feel like going through a reinstall of dozens of programs and settings just to fix a behavior I am only seeing in Calibre. I find it odd that other programs that access external USB devices (like my GPS, iPhones, etc.) have zeros issues. There must be some difference in the way Calibre detects Kindles or Kindles behave at some OS-related level.

For know, if going to trying running Calibre in a Windows 7 VM and see if that gives me any joy. If that fails, maybe I just use Calibre as a pretty e-book catalog.

Have you tried the suggestion of deinstalling the Windows 10 USB driver, and then letting Windows detect new hardware and reinstalling the driver?

Well, plenty of other people have had issues with other programs besides calibre.

I would suggest connecting the device first before opening Calibre, when win 10 asks what you wish to do with it open it as a file folder. Then start Calibre up, win 10 should even remember it correctly next time.

An interesting idea that I may try, although I'm still uncertain as to how that might help. Windows sees the Kindle just fine and mounts it like any other storage. According to the response I got to my ticket, the issue is that Windows doesn't see it as storage that can be ejected and this somehow causes Calibre not to see it.

The implication was that this is a 'common' Windows 10 issue, but I'm not seeing a lot of search hits return useful information.

So how do you safely disconnect? When I plug my Kindle (or any other storage device) into my laptop running Windows 10 it behaves no differently than it did when it was running Windows 8 - When I want to disconnect, I right-click on the drive in explorer and choose "eject", and I can then safely unplug it from the laptop.

In W10 (as in W7) there is a USB tray icon. Click that, then click the device to remove.

Choose the closest to the device level or you may end up ejecting your card reader instead of the card. I find that a reboot is the only way to get that back

Thumbs up Solved windows 10 not recognizing kindle paperwhite 6th gen

Just to add my two pence to this thread....
I had similar problem with my kindle 6th gen after upgrading to Win10.
My laptop recognised that something was attached (ie my kindle) but would not let me open it in explorer to manually transfer books. Calibre also could not recognise it meaning i could not transfer books manually using calibre.

Solution was to 1: open device manager 2:attach my kindle 3: uninstall the 'usb mass storage device' which then appeared in universal serial bus controller (in device manager) 4: disconnect the kindle 5:restart laptop and kindle 6: reattach kindle after both have fully restarted (laptop now recognised kindle in explorer) 7: start calibre which should now (hopefully) also recognise the kindle.

All this means i can finally manually transfer ebooks once again and return to being a

I had this problem today with my new Kindle not being recognized by Windows 10. I tried every USB port on the front and none of them seemed to work. What finally seemed to get it to work was to enable Network sharing or something. eg, in Windows Explorer, click on 'Network' in the bottom on the left pane. I didn't have sharing turned on and Windows 10 asked if I wanted it turned on. I clicked on it to have it enabled, and enabled the private network. AFter this, when I plugged the Kindle back in again it seemed to be recognized by Windows. I am not sure if the two events are connected, but it worked for me.
