modding the EE?

Has anyone looked into modifications of the EE? Pixel's Qi screens are now available for consumer sale. I'm not sure if they're touch screen or not, but they'd be an interesting replacement for the EE LCD screen.

I want it!
But too expensive for me.

Tempting. So tempting. I'd have to see someone else do it first, though, before I risk wrecking a $500 investment.

I ready to risk, but I need to get Pixel's Qi first.

Can't find the resolution of Pixel's Qi. If it different from EE display -- it will be a problem.

If that product is for real, then conventional eInk is on borrowed time...

I heard that pixelqi is NOT so good. It's steel requered much more power than e-ink, and there's some image distortion... Need to look at it by myself.

yeah, but the point is to replace the LCD screen with Pixel Qi, not the e-ink screen, then you can get good power even when running both screens. At least that's what I would want to do.

The Pixel Qi screen is listed as a replacement for the screens in the Samsung N130 and Lenovo S10-2. Both of those are 1024x600. The eDGe's screen is also 1024x600. Big question is do they both use the same connector and signaling.

So, who's going to be the first one to take a screwdriver to their baby and find out?? (not me ;-)

I'm not ready to put $750 ($500 for the eDGe, $250 for the LCD) on the line for what I'm not convinced will represent an improvement that I would find worth $250 even if installs without any problems.

Pixel Qi is based on standard LCD technology and manufacturing processes. The connector is standard so it ought to be a drop in replacement. You'd probably need to wire up the backlight switch (for true reflective mode). If the e-ink mode lives up to the hype then it would be an awesome upgrade. Imagine two sunlight readable screens on your Edge. This would remove the need to transfer webpages etc to the e-ink side. The screen supports full LCD refresh too so movies are possible with backlight off. You'd need to work out how to add a resistive touch layer though - I can't imagine the DIY kit is touch enabled. But God bless Mary-Lou Jepsen and her inginuity. I think this will change the face of tablet computers for the next couple of years. I'm still looking forward to the NotionInk Adam, but I think it will now be pipped at the post by other manufacturers such as Innoversal.

The Pixel Qi display sounds awesome for the LCD replacement provided it's still a touch screen (a bit pricey, though.)

I ordered one Pixel Qi screen from Maker Shed today, for my Acer One. I will keep you posted. It will be great to use it in my garden. I will like to do the same for my Edge if is working on my netbook. Can anybody from Entourage confirm that the screen is compatible and how difficult is to open the edge. I understand I will invalidate my warranty but I think is worth the risk. the device will be perfect with a dual screen pixel qi for web email and e-ink for books.
