Epub size changes upon opening in editor

Hi, I imported a 3mb sized epub in calibre. Still at 3mb in the calibre list. But upon opening it in Calibre Editor it shrunk to 1.5mb.. i did not even edit the file, just opened it and closed without saving. Is this normal?

What may have happened is you used a plugin on the book before the edit session that really had changed the size (smaller cover, less metadata...)

The editor updates the metadata (current size) when it exits, so it now shows the correct size.

Calibre will update the book with the current metadata and cover before opening the book in the editor. If the cover in the library is smaller than the cover in the book, then the book size will shrink. There is an option in the editor preferences to turn this off.

But he said he did not SAVE? That had me puzzled.

It happens before the editor is opened. It had me when I first noticed it, but, I've used it instead of using Polish to just update the metadata and cover.
