How to disable battery percentage icon?

I was wondering if there is a way to hide or toggle just the battery percentage number shown in the top menu.

It makes me a little nervous to see how the battery decreases even by a little.

on a similar note, I would like to know if it is possible to add the wifi thingy (icon) when wireless is on. it seems there is no feedback when your wifi is on/off, unless you add it to the progress bar.
