What does reset/sign in do?

I haven't used wifi for ages, and having trouble getting it to work again.
Looks like I'm going to need to reset the reader. A few questions before I do.

Do you need to have wireless working to sign in?

When you sign out, I think you lose the sql DB, and all the kepubs?

With a factory reset, you loose f/w, kepubs, and epubs?

what does a 'pin' reset do? Do you lose anything? Does it sign you out?

A pin reset just forces the device to restart, it is just used to get the device going again if it freezes and the power off/on slider doesn't work. It doesn't delete anything, but if the device is in the middle of writing a file when reset it might result in a corrupt file, so best to avoid it unless there is no other option.

Logging out deletes the database, and synced content. Just like a factory reset, except that the firmware isn't reloaded or updated and sideloaded content is not deleted.

A factory reset reloads the factory firmware from a recovery partition and reformats the user partition, so all synced and sideloaded content is deleted.

Edit: Both logging out and factory reset will delete all settings including your Adobe authorization.

After signing out or doing a factory reset, you need to setup the device again. This can be done either via WiFi, or by connecting to the Kobo desktop. I would avoid using the Kobo desktop if at all possible, WiFi setup seems to be more reliable (assuming your WiFi connection is good and battery well charged).

Did the Glo always support Wireless setup, or was that added in one of the f/w upgrades? I don't remember.

I got my Glo the first week they were available in New Zealand (which was probably a month or so after they were available elsewhere) and did my original setup via WiFi, so I think all Glos would have that option.

If I cant get the wireless working, it will have to be desktop. do i need internet access for this? or does the desktop act as a proxy to the reader?

As long as the desktop can access internet, setup will go fine. You will need to have the Glo attached via USB to the PC.
