Post, Emily: Etiquette, v.1, 08 Aug 2007

I was wandering about in Project Gutenberg and came across this strange book. It occurred to me that we have a lot of genres but nothing on manners.

I haven't read it but, judging from the passages that I skimmed when preparing it, I think that I would prefer to be a social recluse rather than leave visiting cards, pay afternoon calls etc.

However, if you wish to be excruciatingly polite this may be the book for you.

We're supposed to have manners? When did this happen?

I'd like to see some of those hilarious Pat Boone books on dating that came out in the late 50s and early 60s.

...if they were available....social customs, etc.

Maybe there's something from the pioneer days...

That gets me thinking that there must be books from the early 1900's offering guidance for parenting and homemaking and family life. That would be fascinating.

Emily Post was the de facto etiquette book until Amy Vanderbilt started publishing the same. I think both books are still published in updated forms.
