size of a page

In order to set the size of my tables correctly, what is the height and the width of one page (letter US) in pixel?

And just what device is going to render that?

See if you can find out how to do what you want without tables. Tables are difficult in epubs, especially in smaller devices. The window for smaller devices is 800 vertical by 600 wide. BUT, if you use text to do create a table, it will expand as the size of text is increased and will likely be cut off. I have spent hours shrinking text size and eliminating padding just to fit a table into 600 wide. But it is not pretty, however useable it might be.

Unless it must be searchable, consider using an image of the table. It is one heck of a lot less work and is less likely to have troubles. You can center an image pretty easily, but it takes a witch doctor and voodoo incantations to center a table if you can at all. I found a way to center one I was using, but doing do knocked out all dividing lines in the table....that is the sort of thing you can be up against.

If you must have formatting consider PDFs. They will always be formatted exactly the same way. The trouble is if it is beautiful at full size 8.5"x11", it will be miniscule on an e-reader.

Wolfie is right in his question, how big the screen? If you are doing it for work or for a bunch of friends, all with ipads, there are a lot more pixels available to you. If some must read it on a smart phone, that is a whole different proposition.

It is unfortunate that coded (not image) tables can't be rotated for best width (when needed).
I think people get stuck in their orientation thinking.
I know that when I take pictures, the camera gets held whatever way to get the shot (only rarely, does it get upside down )

For tables, don't use pixels. Use percents. Think of the screen as 100% wide by 100% long. Then use percents to setup the table.

I want to do an interactive book, kind like a website. My tables contain informations and will have hyperlinks which direct to other sections in the document.
I am doing a ebook,first version using word, then converted in a PDF document, using pages 8 1/2 X 11. But if I want my book to be readable for epub, I have to make a epub document, using SIGIL, since I did not fond ANY PDF to EPUB converter able to keep my tables the way they are.

The suggestion of making my tables in % instead of pixels is a good idea, think I will try it. My concern though was to figure out the size of all elements on my page for it to be readable for users of tablets or epub reading programs. But then... maybe I'll reach enough people only with a PDF document...

Just for you to have an idea of my project, here's the code to my first table, using SIGIL :

<table style="background-color: rgb(194, 219, 133); margin-left: 50px;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
<tbody>
<tr>
<th rowspan="7" style="text-align: center; vertical-align: top; height: 325px; width: 240px;"><img alt="sapin" src="../Images/sapin.JPG" style="height: 300px; width: 210px; margin-top: 5px;margin-left:0px;" /><br /></th>

It has been said 1000 times or more. PDF to anything (not paper) is a horrible way to go.

You should probably go from word to PDF for print, then word to HTML for converting to epub. But you're still going to have challenges getting tables to work in epub. You can float in css to try to achieve the same effect. But on a tiny screen, they may not be very happy with you if you make it too complicated.

Image maps don't work in most readers, so you will have an image, but they will still have to click on the text, unless I am mistaken. This can be a little frustrating unless you tell them they must do so. A number of things that work on web pages don't work the same way or at all in epubs and this is true of css as well. This means it can be some work to go from one to the other.

Thanks for all your answers. I guess that for now, I will concentrate on a PDF document, since more people can read it this way, and since its much simplier to do. On my EPUB document, I'll try later with % instead of pixels, and will configure my page to be smaller than 8 1/2 X 11, since on epub readers the pages fit in 800 X 600 px. Thanks again!

That is awful code.

As I said before, don't use pixels. Use percentages.

Except that an epub might be read on anything through a smartphone, a 7" tablet, a 10" tablet, a computer screen... You really have to let go of the idea of controlling page layout - it's about pouring text into a container.

And think about what should happen (and what will actually happen) if the book is displayed in landscape orientation, or in a screen that's smaller than the picture, or with a large font size...

Ok.. using % for the size of my tables is not good. On different ereaders, the size of the table shows as large as the page size or orientation chosen. It's ugly... I have corrected the code for my table, and everything works fine on Calibre and Adobe Digital Edition. The hyperlinks don't work though on Sony reader for PC, I don't know why.

You need to check on different screen sizes, since there are different ones out there. Hyperlinks will not work on most readers.
