I've merged ElWorm's thread with Lynx-lynx's on the same topic in this, the Feedback forum.

Good timing. With the new Right to be Forgotten laws in Europe, soon moderators may be legally required to track down and delete all references to posts you regret.....
Yay. |

No, this is not what this law is about. Everyone can delete all their regrettable posts theirselves, no help from someone else necessary.

What is the logic beyond needing a mod to delete your post. Most sites allow you to delete your own posts.

The reason we don't permit post deletion is that it leaves "holes" in the structure of a thread. We really see no disadvantage in the suggested method of replacing the post contents with "deleted".

Sorry to be late to the party. I have no problem with with the no-delete policy, but isn't there some way to make the policy readily apparent without having to search out this thread? For me, part of the confusion was that the [Edit] button tooltip "Edit/Delete Message" pretty clearly implies an actual delete option...
