The Book of Doctor Dolittle Omnibus by Hugh Lofting (1886 – 1947)

Contents of this collection first published 1920 ~ 1948. Text and illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less.

Meet Doctor Dolittle, that quirky, loveable doctor and naturalist, who has the wonderful ability to speak with animals. Join him and his crew of animal friends as they journey to strange and distant lands, join a circus, stage a Canary Opera, establish a zoo run by the animals who live there, and even travel to the Moon!

This omnibus contains the first ten Doctor Dolittle books, using the original unexpurgated text of early editions. Due to copyright restrictions, Doctor Dolittle and the Green Canary and Puddleby Adventures have been omitted, because they were completed posthumously by other writers. Illustrations have been omitted due to file-size considerations.

British author Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 – 26 September 1947) created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children’s literature. The Doctor first appeared in Lofting’s illustrated letters to his children, written from the trenches while he was serving in the British Army during World War I. The stories (a series of twelve books, the final two completed and published posthumously) are set in early Victorian England. The second in the series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal.

Despite the author’s obviously benign posture, the books became a target of controversy in the 1960’s amid accusations of racism and attitudes of colonialism, and went out of print in the USA for some time. Later editions in the 1980’s were bowdlerized to remove offending content and illustrations. The Doctor and the tales of his adventures are better known today through movie and television adaptations.

Brilliantly conceived and superbly executed. Several old friends of my distant childhood return for a visit. And to have them all in one place.....!

Don't know what your day job is, but if it isn't book design for major publishers, you — and they — missed a bet.
