Calibre Editor forgets EPUB image size.

Recently (Calibre version 7.1 under Xubuntu 22.04) I notice that the editor forgets that I changed an image size in an EPUB. E.g. I use the "Resize Image" button to reduce a cover.jpg from 1400x2100 to my standard size of 333x500 and I see it shrink in the title page. Then I save, exit the editor, and when I re-open the editor the image is back at 1400x2100.
Is there a read-only flag somewhere in the EPUB? To be clear, I am not importing an image from the file system, I am resizing one that came with the book.
Any ideas for what to try next? - Thanks

Covers are automatically updated from metadata every time you edit a book. If you dont want that turn it off in the editor preferences under calibre integration.
