Let's continue the gardening thread

I saw this gardening thread that I was pleased to read: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...=80003&page=27

It made me understand that this forum has members that are passionate about gardening. So why not continue the old thread?

With spring finally here, it's that wonderful time of the year when we start stepping back into our gardens, preparing for a season filled with color and life.

I'm curious to hear about your gardening plans for this year.

Personally, I'm considering expanding my flower garden and bringing in more biodiversity to my green space, but also some new pieces of furniture

I say, why not. Let's continue it.

I'm eager to expand my herb garden. I've been researching different varieties to include like lemon balm and Thai basil. Maybe even sage and thyme, but I'll see how it goes with the first two.
I plan to experiment with companion planting to naturally deter pests and promote healthier growth. I've been reading up on which plants complement each other well and how to strategically arrange them in my garden beds. Fingers crossed, I'll be able to do that.
Updating my outdoor space with some new furniture is another plan of mine. After years of use, my current set shows signs of wear and tear. With the warmer weather approaching, I plan to spend more time dining and hosting gatherings in the garden. I'm thinking of this rattan dining set or something like that. Rattan is durable and weather-resistant, perfect for our weather here in the UK. Plus, rattan furniture has a charming rustic appeal, in my opinion.

Tomatoes mainly. I have some ground by my deck that I'm able to grow them vertically in cages. I've settled on the Brandy Boy hybrid over the years. They have an excellent flavor and are more disease-resistant than the heirlooms that I prefer (but stand little chance grown in the same soil year after year). Organic copper sprayed early and often keeps the blight at bay.

Without expensive fencing, I can't do much traditional gardening because urban deer herds destroy just about everything. I manage to grow some cilantro between the tomato cages, and other herbs in containers on the deck. I've even had good luck with peppers, pole beans and sugar-snap peas in deck containers. I've gotten pretty good at setting up some fairly economical drip irrigation over the years, too.

Currently Sweet Million cherry tomatoes in two of the three boxes on the balcony and a short and sweet carrot variety in the third.

No plants at ground level since the strata frowns on them due to our ongoing bear problem. The claw marks on the recycle shed shows the determination of one bear trying to get at the organics recycling.
