Epub to Mobi stuck @ 47% after 18 hrs
I'm trying to convert an epub book to mobi, and it's been stuck at 47% for 18 hours. I'd read somewhere online that longer books (mine is about 375 pages) can take long, and to just let it run, but 18 hours with no sign of progress tells me something's wrong.
Suggestions? Thanks! |

Are you running the latest Calibre? Have you validated the ePub with epubcheck? We cannot say what's wrong without more information.

I am new to Calibre and I am having exactly this same problem. Sticks at 47%.
Seems an unlikely coincidence, but stranger things have happened. I wondered if perhaps Calibre has some sort of file size limitation. The ePub source file is nearly 63megs. |

Try converting the ePub using Kindlegen and see what happens. If it works, load the resulting conversion into Calibre and using the KindleUnpack plugin, split the Mobi from the KF8 (AZW3). Then dump the Mobi and load the KF8. But if you need to make any changes to the KF8, the editor will allow you to make the changes before you load the KF8.

Just came home to discover that sometime between 5pm and 8:30pm (it ran about 21 hours the conversion had failed. I could post the entire error report, but perhaps the line about 95% of the way down the report that says "Python function terminated unexpectedly (Error Code: 1)" will provide a clue to what went amiss. Help will be appreciated. |

I'm guessing that it ran out of memory, although without the log, it is hard to be certain. Use the 64bit version of calibre instead.

That is an out of memory error and 32bit processes cannot use more than about 2GB of memory on windows. SO switch to 64bit

Read post #5 and follow the directions. If it works, it should take a lot less than 18 hours.
But yes, you need to have the 64-bit Calibre and get rid of the 32-bit version. |

I am complete unfamiliar with any of this sort of file conversion and despite having my Kindle for years this the very first time I've needed to convert a file that I could not convert by emailing it to Amazon/Kindle and having it do the conversion. The file I want to convert is too big to email and that is how I ended up here. I've downloaded Kindlegen, but am having trouble with it. 1) It appears to me that it does not install like a normal program (on PC). 2) So I tried invoking it by double clicking the EXE file. A Window nearly opens, but is on the screen too briefly for me to read even a word of it. In fact it is on the screen so briefly that as far as I can tell there isn't enough time for the graphics card to actually write anything except the exterior window boundary to screen. Then it disappears and nothing happens after that. What's up? What do I do to make it work? Help with be appreciated. (Win 10 Home, 64 bit, ver 1703, building 15063.483) on (Intel i7-650U @ 2.5Ghz, 16 gig RAM) |

Kindlegen is run from the command line. It does not have a GUI. You you need to open a command line to use Kindlegen.
kindlegen source.epub -c1 -o destination.mobi That's the command you'd use. obviously changing the filenames as appropriate. You have to either have Kindlegen in your path or in the same directory as the ePub. You should be in the same directory as the ePub. Last edited by JSWolf; 07-28-2017 at 07:36 PM. |

GUI's are good, but they cause too many people to have no clue how to use a command line interface.

@Carbonman - have you tried installing the 64 bit version of calibre and re-running the conversion, as advised by Kovid Goyal.
