Sony PRS-650: Memory Cards are not recognized

Hello,
i have a little problem with the new PRS-650 from sony: The Calibre does not recognize the memory cards in the device. It could only be seen as an extern device. So i cannot manage the reader the way i want to.

Thanks for your help

What memory cards did you try ?
I had no problems with several 1,2 and 4 GB SDHC cards.

That's happened to me twice before. In both cases, unplugging the reader, and plugging it in again (once its ready to go) has fixed it.

The 650 reader supports cards up to 32GB, I have two 16GB cards in mine right now, they work in the reader, and in calibre, but I have had the cards be not recognized a couple of time by calibre. My problem however has always resolved itself by simply plugging the reader into the computer for a second or third time.

I'm sure the specs say it supports them, but in my experience, anything over 4GB works unreliably at best, not at all, at worst.

The Reader has no problem with the SDHC card. Only calibre hasn't recognized it as an internal memory. I have more than 8 GB of pdf-Files and epub's on the sd card and the reader just works with it.

But it would be much easier if i could use calibre for managing the data on it.

Thanks

Calibre sees Sony-connected cards as USB drives. Thus, first and foremost, your O/S must correctly identify the card's drive ID information. Beyond the tests for drive name (Sony mandated), the only test it makes is to be sure if the Sony database is not on the card, then calibre can create one. If it cannot, then the card is ignored. To say again, this test is done by opening a file on a drive.

Run debug device detection to see if your OS (you never do say what you are using) properly reports the drive to calibre. Post the results here. My guess is that the card is not being properly reported.

If device detection does see the card, then check that the file Sony Reader/database/cache.xml is on the card and writable.

Well, the problem is now clear. The solution isn't.

First, you never said that the device wasn't recognized at all. We have been operating under the assumption that the problem is the card, but it is worse than that.

Your version of windows is not correctly reporting the drive information. For example,
Code:
DISK&V EN_SONY&
is supposed to be
Code:
DISK&VEN_SONY&
Because of that, calibre does not recognize the drive as a Sony drive.

I have no idea why this might be happening. Perhaps someone else will.
